This volume's focus on establishing a direct exchange between History and International Relations is unique in the contemporary literature on international institutions. While there have been attempts in both disciplines to engage with the other and to integrate their respective insights, a direct, focused exchange on core issues of international institutional development has rarely taken place.

The volume takes this lacuna as a starting point. The structure of the volume is strictly symmetrical. In each of the four main sections, one historian and one IR scholar elaborate their views on one of four main aspects of conference diplomacy: inclusion/exclusion, effectiveness, legitimacy, and international order. This approach allows the authors to tackle the more general role of institutions in international order in a long-term historical perspective. The diagnosed crisis of contemporary, liberal order appears in a different light when viewed before the background of continuity and change in the past 200 years. This book has the potential to become essential reading for scholars and practitioners alike.

How did German aesthetic values change during the Weimar Republic and after its immediate collapse at the beginning of the National Socialist period? Contrary to conventional narratives that depict modernist aesthetics as static, shaping principles of modern art and design, this volume argues for their complexity and ever-shifting nature.

Illuminating the vital exchanges that occurred across multiple art forms during a period of unmatched cultural activity, this multi-disciplinary volume explores the cultural transition between Weimar- and National Socialist-era Germany and offers a fresh perspective on the fate of modernism during a time of censorship and social stigma. Featuring essays on architecture, painting, photography, film, sculpture, cabaret, typography, and commercial design, the volume explores competing and comparable themes across German art from 1919-1945 and addresses how modern approaches like New Vision coexisted with more traditional and established artistic modes.

Such visual complexity is evident from the volume's eclectic coverage: these include 'sexology' and eroticism, visual grammar in typography and architecture, the reception of Weimar art in the National Socialist period, and the formation and transformation of queer and Jewish identities. The volume encompasses subjects as different as shadow in the animated films of Lotte Reininger, filmic adaptations of Heinrich Zille's social commentary in the 1920s, the photography of Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, and depictions of female sexuality in Magnus Hirschfeld's oeuvre. By bridging multiple artistic fields, this highly interdisciplinary work provides a fresh perspective on the ever-changing art and aesthetic principles of early-20th-century Germany.

Shortlisted for the 2025 Muslim World Book Award.

Mulki Al-Sharmani undertakes a close textual analysis of the hermeneutics of selected Islamic feminism scholars as they engage with the Qur'an, Hadith, and different textual genres in Islamic interpretive tradition.
She focuses on the relevant works of nine prominent scholars located in North America, Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa.

Bringing their works into conversation with one another, Islamic Feminism critically examines the epistemological and methodological contributions and challenges of these scholars. Al-Sharmani shows how these scholars' engagements with the question of gender also yields new insights into the interplay between Islamic theology, ethics, and law. Drawing on extensive multi-sited ethnographic research, Al-Sharmani examines the societal significance and limits of the studied scholarship and how it informs and is informed by multidimensional Muslim gender activism in both global and local contexts. Towards the latter aim, Al-Sharmani focuses on two case studies: the global movement Musawah, and Egyptian Islamic feminism in the aftermath of the 2011 Revolution.

Was Deutschlands Politik gegenueber Russland betrifft, schiessen die Spekulationen ins Kraut. Doch was sagen die Quellen?

This book tells the story of Iranian women's accomplishments and struggles over the course of history, spanning from ancient Elam to the present day. It explores the evolving conditions of women's lives in each era, and how women's choices and initiatives have shaped Persian civilization. In the process, it presents a cast of unique, often brilliant individuals, and refutes the traditional assumption that men were always the authors of Iranian culture, business, law, religion, art, education, literature, agriculture, science, architecture, philosophy, social mores, and the writing of history. It shows how Iranian women have always been creative, influential players in these fields, and how their contributions have enriched the world.

This unique and rich collection of narratives, written or dictated by formerly enslaved Africans between 1820 and 1876, offers a rare snapshot of African voices in the history of slavery. Including narratives from the Atlantic and Indian Ocean trades, as well as testimonies from enslaved people who never left the African continent, it expands the chronological and geographical scope of known accounts of enslavement, highlights the few but important women's narratives and provides thoughtful analysis and context about internal enslavement, the slave trade and the process of liberation.

Made up of 32 narratives, each carefully contextualised and introduced, this volume comprises some of the most substantial and previously unpublished accounts of the slave trade in the archives of the Church Missionary and Methodist Missionary Societies. Bringing new testimonies to light and enriching our understanding of enslaved voices, African Narratives of Slavery and Abolition is an important and much-needed contribution to the 'biographical turn' and study of the slave trade.

This volume unpacks the phenomenon of skipped generation households-where children live with their grandparents and without their parents-as they become an increasingly common family dynamic in Nigeria and globally. The skipped generation household's emergence in sub-Saharan Africa has been driven by factors including the HIV/AIDS epidemic, labour-based migration, and ethno-religious conflicts. By examining the data from a national study on skipped generation households in Nigeria, contributions track benefits, opportunities, and effects associated with growing up in these households. Details including academic performance and career aspirations for grandchildren, as well as social-psychological and physical well-being of both them and their grandparents, are explored.

Sonntag, 27. Februar 2022.

World-renowned scholar of human geography, development, and environmental change Antonio Ioris presents an original reconceptualisation of the notions of difference and indifference and their impacts on social structures.

Drawing on a wide range of philosophical debates, and offering groundbreaking new insights into geographically specific trends through the lens of indigenous geographies, Ioris explores how political actors use notions of difference to foster indifference for the purposes of domination, which ultimately crystallizes in what he terms mis-difference: a calcified, difficult-to-overcome obstacle to concord and fairness that underpins capitalist relations of property and production. At the same time, Ioris shows how some social actors use the concept of difference for reconciliation, for overcoming indifference and mis-difference, and suggests how these moves can help to fight against ideologies that produce our unequal world and facilitate land-grabs. Ioris elucidates all of this in concrete terms through a study of the Guarani-Kaiowa people in Brazil: of how they have been oppressed by state-sanctioned indifference and misdifference, and of how they are resisting through a contestation of what difference can mean, and how it can function, in the contemporary world.

It is free to read on the Oxford Academic platform and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations. The end of Britain's empire in Southeast Asia in the wake of World War II generated new opportunities for colonial subjects across the region to reimagine themselves as citizens of a dizzying array of potential new nations. While post-war optimism and a global push for decolonisation created an environment where myriad communities felt a palpable sense of possibility for bringing their aspirations of nationhood to life, many of these desires were unfulfilled. Imagining Malaya is an exploration of one of those many imagined nations that never came to be. It narrates a series of seemingly disparate and contradictory political acts by the Peranakan Chinese -- a creolised community borne of intermarriage between the earliest Chinese migrants to the region and indigenous Malays -- in the post-World War II period to demonstrate that the community were, in fact, seeking to bring to life a cosmopolitan, inclusive, and multi-ethnic imagination of the Malay(si)an nation. Engaging in a critical re-examination of the intertwined processes of decolonization and nation-making, Imagining Malaya provides an alternative reading of Malay(si)a's path to merdeka (independence) from the perspective of the Peranakan. It narrates how a once powerful community at the centre of Malay(si)an politics and society came undone by their attempts to present an alternative imagination of the nation which challenged the ethnocentrism that came to dominate the country's political life. Rewriting the Peranakan into the centre of Malaysia's national story rather than its periphery is a parable on the complexities and pitfalls of attempting to forge a representative nation-state from a multi-ethnic society during the transition between colony and nation. By bringing the Peranakan imaginary of the nation to life, Bernard Z. Keo makes a case for how studying nations that were unrealized can reveal just as much as investigating those that were.

Called the "the most important number you've never heard of" by leading environmental economists, the social cost of carbon (SCC) aims to capture in a precise number the harm caused by emitting a single ton of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. In The Social Cost of Carbon, J. Paul Kelleher offers a systematic analysis of the social cost of carbon, its theoretical basis, and its proper role in climate economics and climate policy design. The book explains that the SCC is not one concept but four, each of which is addressed to a distinct task in climate economics. Moreover, these concepts can be sorted into two families that correspond to the two branches of welfare economics, social choice theory and general equilibrium theory. Kelleher draws on these radically different theoretical frameworks to explain how a mathematically identical pair of SCC concepts can emerge from each. He then argues that the analytical power of each SCC concept is limited by its inability to fully capture the ethical considerations that bear on responsible climate policy. The book concludes by explaining how some SCC concepts can and should be put to work in real-world climate change policy analysis-providing practical advice for translating the SCC into tangible change.

This book explores the news media's coverage of Indigenous-settler reconciliation following the conclusion of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC). Using a comparative case study research design, the book examines news coverage of three significant Indigenous rights issues and events during the post-TRC era. The findings presented demonstrate that in the post-TRC era, the Canadian news media continue to produce systemic patterns in coverage which reject, marginalize and erase the territorial rights and claims of Indigenous Peoples. The author concludes that rather than helping to move the relationship between Indigenous Peoples and settlers forward along a path of reconciliation, power-sharing, and the resurgence of land-based self-determination, the news media are continuing to construct discourses and representations that work against the political objectives of Indigenous Peoples and reinforce settler colonial power relationships in Canada.

This volume illustrates and analyses the stereotypes and prejudices underlying the social representation of violence against women as it is narrated and described in Italy by the press and by court judgements. After a theoretical reflection on the role of culture and socialisation in reproducing the conditions underlying gender-based violence and its normalisation, and after reconstructing the historical evolution of gender roles and the stages of women's condition, the book presents the results of a sociological and of a socio-linguistic analysis on a vast corpus of 16,715 newspaper articles published by fifteen Italian newspapers on gender crimes (specifically: femicide; sexual violence; domestic violence; women trafficking) . The chapters analyze how national, macro-regional and local Italian press narrates violence against women but they also analyze a repertoire of 283 judicial sentences. The results show a clear tendency to redistribute the responsibilities of these crimes between the perpetrator and the victim, leading not only to secondary victimization but also to tertiary victimization, affecting the quality of Italian institutions as well as the democratic fiber of the nation.

The volume finally includes a compendium of the best and the worst practices found in the corpuses of sentences and newspapers' articles and a set of recommendations addressed to the institutional actors and journalists for a correct representation of gender-based violence, free from those stereotypes and prejudices that violate the dignity of male violence' victims and prevent them from accessing justice.

This book sheds light on a particularly complex aspect of post-conflict security reform: the transformation of the Kosovo Liberation Army into the Kosovo Security Force, a unique political and legal process. The authors demonstrate how different international and domestic actors played a role in this process and navigated a complex web of international law, political interests and the requirements to maintain peace and security in Kosovo and the region. It makes a special contribution to ongoing discussions on state development and peacebuilding, while acting as a case study for upcoming post-conflict scenarios.

The overarching aim of the book is to provide the first comprehensive account of Sweden's feminist foreign policy and its dissemination through digital diplomacy. In contrast to other scholarly studies of digital diplomacy that tend to view it as a technological and apolitical device for online diplomatic communication, this book examines the specific political dynamics of digital diplomacy. It posits that digital diplomacy is a highly political practice and form of communication. The book offers an in-depth examination of the interdependent relationship between digital diplomacy and feminist foreign policy, with an empirical focus on Sweden. Additionally, it introduces a novel theoretical framework to analyse the political characteristics of digital diplomacy, emphasising the oscillation between antagonism and agonism at the intersection of feminist foreign policy and digital diplomacy.

In sum, the book provides new theoretical and empirical knowledge of why, how, and in what ways power-political dynamics are produced, sustained, and transformed within the contexts of feminist foreign policy and digital diplomacy. While the focus centres on Sweden, the authors contend that their novel approach to examining the political dynamics of digital diplomacy and feminist foreign policy applies to other country case studies as well.

This book provides an updated analysis of political developments in a sample of overseas territories of France, the United States, China, Denmark, the Netherlands, Russia, the United Kingdom, Portugal, Spain and New Zealand. Ranging from Guam, Diego Garcia or New Caledonia/Kanaky to Greenland/Kalaallit Nunaat, Sakhalin, Kuril or Puerto Rico and other territories located all over the globe, these subnational island jurisdictions deserve attention because they lie at the intersection of many evolving issues such as decolonisation, self-determination, post-colonialism, globalisation, climate change, patterns of innovative governance. Moreover, they offer occasional "hotspots" for analysing international rivalries, conflicts related to illegal migration, disputes pertaining to the delimitation of exclusive economic zones (EEZ) and clashes between mainlands and islands. In addition, they provide fascinating case-studies to grasp the interplay of subnational, national and international politics, particularly in the age of the strategic shift towards the Indo-Pacific. Fred Constant reveals the extent to which these invisible dots on the map may matter in contemporary world affairs.

This book delves into the profound question of whether moral philosophy rests upon metaphysical foundations. Contrary to the assertions of moral relativists such as John Mackie and Bernard Williams, who contend that ethics is devoid of metaphysical grounding, this work challenges their claims. Designed for those who approach morality and view ethics as a subject firmly anchored in metaphysics, this book is an essential exploration. It delves into the metaphysical underpinnings of morality, examining the source of morality in the metaphysical self, the intricate relations between ethics, self and the world and the interplay between ethics and metaphysics. It tackles fundamental questions, such as why freedom is the foundational postulate of morality and why, akin to Kant, we must acknowledge the importance of moral law. Furthermore, the chapters explore the nature of values and their metaphysical standing, the practical application of morality in the real world, the essence of virtues as attributes of the human soul, the interconnectedness of morality with rationality and spirituality and the challenges ethics faces from relativism and naturalism. The book appeals to moral philosophy researchers and students interested in unraveling morality's metaphysical roots. It offers an investigative exploration of the intricacies surrounding the problems of morality.

Alexander Lemons is a Marine Corps scout sniper who, after serving multiple tours during the Iraq War, returned home seriously and mysteriously ill. Joshua Howe is an environmental historian who met Lemons as a student in one of his classes. Together they have crafted a vital book that challenges us to think beyond warfare's acute violence of bullets and bombs to the "slow violence" of toxic exposure and lasting trauma.

In alternating chapters, Lemons vividly describes his time in Fallujah and elsewhere during the worst of the Iraq War, his descent into a decade-long battle with mysterious and severe sickness, and his return to health; Howe explains, with clarity and scientific insight, the many toxicities to which Lemons was exposed and their potential consequences. Together they cover the whirlwind of toxic exposures military personnel face from the things they touch and breathe in all the time, including lead from bullets, jet fuel, fire retardants, pesticides, mercury, dust, and the cocktail of toxicants emitted by the open-air "burn pits" used in military settings to burn waste products like paint, human waste, metal cans, oil, and plastics. They also consider PTSD and traumatic brain injury, which are endemic among the military and cause and exacerbate all kinds of physical and mental health problems. Finally, they explore how both mainstream and alternative medicine struggle to understand, accommodate, and address the vast array of health problems among military veterans.

Warbody challenges us to rethink the violence we associate with war and the way we help veterans recover. It is a powerful book with an urgent message for the nearly twenty million Americans who are active military or veterans, as well as for their families, their loved ones, and all of us who depend on their service.

This book offers a biographical, intellectual and academic history of sociology in the late Qing and Republic of China period. The 46 sociologists featured in this volume are chosen from the pantheon of notable scholars who labored in this burgeoning field. Each of the 46 chapters is devoted to introducing one sociologist. Every chapter begins with a short biography that sheds light on how one sociologist became the scholar they were and earned their place in not only sociology, but also, for some of them, other fields in the social sciences and the humanities. This is followed by a review and analysis of the representative works by this sociologist, and how those laid the foundation for and contributed to the early development of a particular field of research in sociology as we know it today. The book weaves together a history of this academic discipline in China over those turbulent decades that organically combines personal details, methodological development, institutional changes and also larger social, economic and intellectual trends.

This book explores how Australia managed the prisoner of war issue throughout the Second World War and the immediate post-war period. It examines how the Australian government responded to the captivity of thousands of Australians in Italy and the detention of an even greater number of Italians in Australia. The war, it finds, created a series of diplomatic and political challenges for belligerent governments, including Australia. The author contends that Australia's response was guided not only by other pragmatic considerations such as reciprocity, the practicalities of war and, importantly, national interest. The Australian government was not the only one to manage its prisoner of war policy in this way. By exploring the Australian government's relationship with Britain as part of the British Empire, this book clarifies under what circumstances and to what extent Australia sought to assert a level of independence in pursuing its national interest, even when that approach did not align with British policy.

During the 1930s and 1940s, Jews in the Middle East took part in extensive debates on fascism in the public sphere. How did the rise of fascism impact the ways in which Jews in the region envisioned the past, present and future? Confronting Fascism in the Arabic Jewish Press examines Jewish discussions on the positions and identities of Jews in the Middle East within the context of multifocal debates on fascism. Focussing on the Arabic Jewish press in Egypt, Lebanon and Syria, it studies the ideas of its editors and main contributors and their intellectual networks. Putting those debates within the context of social, political and national reorientations following the end of the Ottoman Empire, the book uses an ideas-based and conceptual approach to also connect this history to global debates on fascism centred on the concepts of race, civilization and religion. In doing so, it situates Jewish discussions on fascism in the Middle East not only at the heart of Arab intellectual history, but also as part of a globalizing public sphere during the interwar, war and immediate post-war periods (1933-1948).

What does it take to construct humanity's cultural history and what do these efforts produce in the world? In The Politics of World Heritage, Elif Kalaycioglu analyzes UNESCO's flagship regime, which seeks to curate a cultural history of humanity, attached to "outstanding universal value" and tethered to goals of peace and solidarity. Kalaycioglu's analysis tracks that construction across fifty years of the regime and maps it onto three distinct visions: humanity as a rarified transhistorical subject, humanity as a diverse subject, and humanity as a subject that is adequately represented by the community of nation states. In each of these constructions, experts and states take up the cultural and historical resources that circulate within the regime to narrate a humanity into being, and position themselves as its adjudicators, contributors and custodians. Each construction comes with remainders, that is, parts of humanity excluded from this cultural history, and internal hierarchies between those at its center and others that remain on the margins. These hierarchies challenge the aspiration to peace and solidarity. While these aspirations have changed across the three iterations of humanity, across the different forms, the regime's structures and participants have been ill-equipped and hesitant to engage with the underbellies of humanity towards robust visions of peace and solidarity. In contrast to this general tendency, Kalaycioglu excavates from select nomination files nested constructions of humanity that hold onto the globality and unevenness of its political conditions and presents the possibility of robust visions of peace and solidarity, and humanity's different futures.
