The early chapters consider the backdrop Latin American women footballers operate in, a media and institutional panorama that privileges a heteronormative athletic femininity whilst ensuring women's football is never portrayed as anything other than an inferior version of the hegemonic (men's) game.

Following this, drawing on nine months of ethnographic fieldwork in which 33 semi-structured interviews were carried out with players and institutional figures, this pioneering book foregrounds the lived reality of women's football in three strategic locations. Firstly, three months were spent in the Amazon region of Brazil where Esporte Clube Iranduba provides a fascinating alternative model for the growth of women's football. This is contrasted with Santos FC, where women's football tends to be constantly overshadowed by the presence of banal patriarchy, and finally with another fleeting glimpse of how another model is possible at Atletico Huila of Colombia, the surprise winner of the women's Copa Libertadores in 2018.

The murder of George Floyd in 2020, the renewed international take up of the cry Black Lives Matter and the subsequent toppling of a statue commemorating slave-merchant-turned-philanthropist Edward Colston in Bristol provoked urgent questions on memorialisation, white privilege, social justice and repair. Debates on how legacies of colonialism and empire in Britain should be addressed spilled out of the scholarly world into the public discourse. In the immediate wake of the statue toppling this book offers a unique, distinctive and timely contribution to those debates: a series of voices and experiences are offered as critical commentaries and accounts of recent interventions on an official heritage narrative. It sets out to break the 'dead silence', by bringing together diverse perspectives from academics, artists, activists, heritage professionals and tourist guides. Through their analyses of contemporary films (Une colonie, Avant les rues, Bon cop, bad cop, Les Affames, Tom a la ferme, Uvanga, among others), directors (including Xavier Dolan, Denis Cote, Sophie Desrape, Chloe Robichaud, Jean-Marc Vallee, and Monia Chokri) and genres (such as the buddy comedy and the zombie film), our authors examine the growing tension between Quebec cinema as a "national cinema" and as an art form that reflects the transnationalism of today's world, a new form of fluidity of individual experiences, and an increasing on-screen presence of Indigenous subjects, both within and outside the borders of the province. Since the 1950s, film production in Ireland has evolved into a mature industry creating high-profile film, television drama, documentary and animation for both the domestic and international markets. This book traces that evolution through a history of the screen production industries on the island of Ireland. More specifically, the book is concerned with the people who work in these industries - how they have shaped the work they do and the conditions under which that work is carried out. The book therefore highlights the vital contribution of film and television workers to screen policy and labour relations in Ireland, north and south.

The book presents a local history that explicates the development of the screen industries in Ireland and their relationship to the global Hollywood production system. While the emphasis is on film and television workers, the book acknowledges the essential producer contribution to building the industry as it exists today. However it also emphasises producer obligations towards the screen workers they employ. The result is a local history of Irish screen production told mainly from a labour perspective, using previously unused records from the trade union archives and other labour history sources.
