The Damietta Crusade, which is often referred to as the 'Fifth Crusade', was the first of the numbered crusades to be targeted against Egypt. Rather than directly targeting Jerusalem, its architects believed that by threatening the economic hub of Cairo the Ayyubid sultan would gladly give up Jerusalem in exchange. Here Laurence Marvin offers the first book-length treatment of the Damietta Crusade in almost 40 years. Written in accessible language and driven by a narrative and analysis firmly grounded in the primary sources in multiple languages, Marvin emphasizes what made this campaign unique, from its planning, choice of target, "brown-water" or amphibious nature, course, and result. He presents a multi-sided perspective by amply describing and analyzing the Egyptians and other groups in the eastern Mediterranean who played an important role in mounting a successful defense against Latin Christian forces. Marvin contends that the crusade in Egypt failed not because it derived from an unachievable or flawed grand strategy, but because of shifting operational goals, leadership issues, the social dynamics within the army, arrivals and departures of participants, and the effective defense led by Egypt's sultan, al-Kamil. This detailed analysis of an understudied event of thirteenth century history brings the latest methodologies of military history to bear on a wide range of primary sources, raising important questions about the complex nature of warfare and crusade in the medieval Mediterranean.

The main objective of this book is to add, from a humanist perspective, new interdisciplinary insights and research results to the current academic debate on aging. The collection aims to enhance and complement the predominantly biomedical and sociological debates and provide a more comprehensive and highly topical view on aging and old age. By purveying a meaning-in-life perspective to the current debate we want to enrich and to deepen the research on aging, thus aspiring to an ideal of meaningful aging. The starting point of this book is a humanistic meaning frame for addressing basic needs of a meaningful existence, such as having goals in life, a sense of self-worth, connectedness with others, moral justification, a certain degree of understanding (comprehensibility), direction and influence with a view to cohesion in life, and not in the least place: (living) pleasure or excitement. Taken together, the essays show that experiencing a meaningful life contributes to one's mentalresilience, conceived as the ability to realize a humane individuality (autonomy) in thinking and acting in situations of adversity and vulnerability, particularly those faced by older people.

Jahrhundert bietet einen komplexen Ueberlieferungsfall: Der je nach Handschrift in unterschiedlichem Umfang und Wortlaut ueberlieferte Text geht auf lateinische Quellen des 12.?14. Jahrhunderts zurueck, ist in einem Teil der Textzeugen mit einem Bildprogramm ausgestattet und darueber hinaus mehrfach zusammen mit eschatologischen und chronikalischen Texten ueberliefert. Auf Grundlage einer fundierten Aufbereitung aller Textzeugen macht Sarah Hutterer den Text erstmals in einer Edition zugaenglich und untersucht das Verhaeltnis von Text und Bild sowie den Umgang mit den lateinischen Quellen im Detail. So wird eine Form von Schriftlichkeit sichtbar, in der sich Phaenomene von Kompilation und Neuschoepfung, von Uebersetzung und Eigenem wie auch des Werkcharakters einzelner Teile und der Konzeption mehrerer solcher Teile als zusammengehoeriges Ganzes ueberlagern. Germanos II (1223-40) was the Orthodox patriarch of Constantinople at a critical period after its fall in 1204 to the fourth crusade, when Byzantium looked doomed to irrelevance, as its emperor and patriarch eked out a shadowy existence in exile at Nicaea. Germanos II's major achievement was to give his office renewed substance by obtaining recognition of his ecumenical authority not only from the community of Orthodox churches, but tacitly from the papacy itself. In doing so he also restored a modicum of prestige to the imperial dignity. Remarkable as his legacy was, it has gone largely unrecognised both by contemporaries and by modern scholarship. Why memory of his work was not better preserved is a puzzle to which his unfairly neglected sermons offer a key. They reveal an abrasive character, whose humble origins put him at odds with both the court nobility and the higher clergy. He was more concerned with the promotion of the evangelical ideal through preaching and social justice than he was with church administration and the performance of the liturgy. He was in conventional terms an embarrassment, who was best forgotten. The twenty-one sermons translated here were not, as was so often the case, exercises in belles-lettres but a sustained effort to bring about both social and moral reform as a precondition for the recovery of Constantinople from the Latins. They bear comparison with those of John Chrysostom, whose influence is evident in the way Germanos II used his sermons to create a dialogue with his audience. This new translation of a neglected source casts light on the surprising survival of Byzantium at a critical moment in its history.

Vom spaten 4. bis zum 7. Jahrhundert war das ostroemische Kaisertum in Konstantinopel immobilisiert. Die standige Anwesenheit der Kaiser machte Veranderungen ihres Kommunikationsverhaltens unvermeidlich. Ihre lokale Gebundenheit befeuerte die Bedeutung und Entwicklung der rituellen Ausgestaltung von Herrschaft, die zuvor schon eine zunehmende Rolle gespielt hatte. In Konstantinopel konnten sich die Kaiser der performativen Kommunikation mit Gruppen des Reichs, die ihre Herrschaft stutzten und auf deren Akzeptanz sie angewiesen waren, namlich nicht entziehen. Das Medium dieser Kommunikation waren die hoefischen Zeremonien. Christian Rollinger untersucht das Hofzeremoniell der Spatantike als eine Bundelung sinn- und machtkonstituierender Rituale, in denen sich die wesentlichen Ideologeme des spatantiken Kaisertums spiegelten und die ihnen Inhalt und Leben verliehen. Zeremoniell und Herrschaft waren untrennbar miteinander verbunden. Der Autor zeigt durch eine systematische und umfassende Untersuchung, dass Zeremoniell nicht allein Ausdruck, sondern auch Gestaltung, nicht nur autoritative monarchische Reprasentation, sondern ebenso performative Konstruktion des spatantiken Kaisertums war.

Die langfristige Interaktion beider Akteure war trotz der roemischen Uebermacht keine Einbahnstrasse, sondern fusste auf einem enormen kontinuierlichen Waren- und Ideentransfer. Volume 60 of Studies in Church History examines the theme of hypocrisy in the Church. This theme touches upon tensions at the heart of Christian teaching and experience: the distance between ideal and lived practice, and conflicts between sincerity of faith and the demands of society and the state. To explore the place of hypocrisy in Christian thought is to highlight issues of deception, dissimulation and double standards - rich themes in Christian history and discourse, encompassing a wide range of topics such as casuistry and priestcraft. This monograph presents a novel investigation of the magistri militum, the highest-ranking officers within the late Roman army. It posits that between 340 and 395 CE, specific magistri seized opportune moments, notably during the political voids following emperors' deaths, to reshape the character of their office and expand its pivotal role in the military-political sphere. This transformation played a decisive role in the eventual dissolution of the Western Roman Empire. Furthermore, the study employs the prosopographical method to reevaluate previous scholarship regarding the proportion of barbarian and Roman generals. Notably, the research posits that the balance between Roman and non-Roman officers was far more equitably distributed than hitherto conjectured. Additionally, prosopography is used to reconstruct the fourth-century cursus honorum. Finally, this work utilizes the analytical framework of social network analysis, predicated upon the application of mathematical equations and formulae to elucidate the intricate dynamics of positive and negative relationships. The findings of this study furnish valuable insights and prospects for further research.

Experts of ancient sport have long treated "money" and "honor" as opposites. Up to the 1970s, the idea of Greek gentlemen's sport prevailed. It is one of the most exciting challenges for sport historians to overcome this opposition and to develop a concept that integrates the economic and symbolic motivations of ancient athletes. From the very beginning, economic aspects played a role in Greek sport, and honor remained important until the end of ancient athletics. But despite these continuities there are obvious developments in favor of economic factors: Cash prizes grew in importance since the Hellenistic period, and symbolical honors awarded to victorious athletes by their hometowns were transformed into financial ones. The studies collected in this volume aim at exploring the relationship of money and honor with regard to athletes, festivals and poleis.

Should religion and politics be kept apart? What should be the relationship between the church and the state? M.Y. Ciftci answers these questions by studying the most important event in the recent history of the Catholic Church: The Second Vatican Council (1962-65).

The book provides a new interpretation of the Council's teaching on church-state relations to better appreciate its flaws and need for reform. By paying attention to the (often overlooked) importance given by the Council to the lay apostolate, it reveals how the Council did not reform, as is often thought, but retained a flawed conception of the laity's role in politics.

It then proposes a new framework for understanding church-state relations using the ressourcement method of returning to scripture and tradition, and by a critical dialogue with Oliver O'Donovan and various Protestant biblical scholars of the Powers in the New Testament. Ciftci shows how fruitful an self-consciously ecumenical approach can be for political theology. As most ressourcement theologians have overlooked political issues, and since ecumenical theology rarely touches on issues of church-state relations, this work makes an original contribution to the ressourcement project and to ecumenism.
