Customary law exists by virtue of repeated behaviour and restatements about the existence of rules. When sources of international law are deployed, historically contingent events are turned into manifestations of pre-given and repeatable categories. This book studies the workings of repetition across six discourses and practices in international law. It links acts of repetition to similar practices in religion, theatre, film and commerce. Building on the dialectics of repetition as set out by Soren Kierkegaard, it examines how repetition in international law is used to connect concrete practices to something that is bound to remain absent, unspeakable or unimaginable.

In this book Pragati Rawat and John C. Morris identify and evaluate the impact of factors that can help explain the difference in e-participation, public participation using information and communication technology, in different countries.

While cross-sectional studies have been covered, few have taken an in-depth look at cross-national studies. This book attempts to fill the gap using quantitative panel data to explore the influence of technology and institutions, and the impact of their complex relationships in a mediation and moderation analysis, on e-participation. The current study reviews the scholarly work in the field of "offline" and "online participation" to identify a set of antecedents that influence e-participation. A conceptual framework is developed, supported by the theories from the public policy and socio-technical premise. The authors utilize secondary data, primarily from the UN and World Economic Forum, for 143 countries from three waves of surveys to measure the dependent and explanatory variables. The panel data is statistically analyzed and findings reveal the role of technology as a mediator as well as a moderator for institutions' impact on e-participation.

Focusing on the diversity of actors involved in humanitarian assistance alongside the times and spaces of action, the book draws a direct line between privileges of movement and global inequalities of race, class, gender and disability rooted in colonial histories and white supremacy and humanitarian efforts that save lives while entrenching such inequalities. Based on eight years of research with border police, European Union officials, professional humanitarians, and grassroots activists in Europe's borderlands, including Italy and Greece, the book argues that this kind of saving lives builds, expands and deepens already restrictive borders and exclusive and exceptional identities through what the book calls humanitarian borderwork.

The climate crisis is not primarily a problem of 'believing science' or individual 'carbon footprints' - it is a class problem rooted in who owns, controls and profits from material production. As such, it will take a class struggle to solve. In this ground breaking class analysis, Matthew T. Huber argues that the carbon-intensive capitalist class must be confronted for producing climate change. Yet, the narrow and unpopular roots of climate politics in the professional class is not capable of building a movement up to this challenge. For an alternative strategy, he proposes climate politics that appeals to the vast majority of society: the working class. Huber evaluates the Green New Deal as a first attempt to channel working class material and ecological interests and advocates building union power in the very energy system we so need to dramatically transform. In the end, as in classical socialist movements of the early 20th Century, winning the climate struggle will need to be internationalist based on a form of planetary working class solidarity.

Dabei wird die Judikatur der Unionsgerichte zu diesem Themenkomplex vollumfaenglich ausgewertet. Die unionsrechtlich veranlasste Rechtskraftdurchbrechung wird anhand ihrer Erscheinungsformen kategorisiert und die Kriterien, deren Vorliegen eine Rechtskraftdurchbrechung nach sich ziehen, werden aufgezeigt. Im letzten Abschnitt werden Ueberlegungen anhand der herausgearbeiteten Kriterien angestellt, in welchen Rechtsgebieten die unionsrechtlich veranlasste Rechtskraftdurchbrechung gegebenenfalls zukuenftig auftreten koennte.

Aber lassen sich Freiheit und systembedingte Notwendigkeit vereinigen? Das Boese bestimmt Schelling in Absetzung zu der Tradition, die es zum Beispiel als ?privatio boni? fasst, als eigenstaendige Realitaet. Ferner versucht er, die Position, die Kant in der Religionsschrift erreicht hatte, in sein System zu integrieren, indem er Kants Auffassung von der ?intelligiblen Tat? in ein hochspekulatives Theorem transformiert, dessen Schichten im einzelnen aufzudecken sind. Vehikel fuer diese Integration ist die zentrale Rolle der Sollizitation Erregung als Mitte des Lebens, ein Lehrstueck, das Schelling vor identitaetsphilosophischem Hintergrund ontologisch einfuehrt und moralphilosophisch ausgestaltet. Schliesslich ist zu sehen, wie Schelling in Auseinandersetzung mit Leibnizens grossem Werk einen eigenen Entwurf der Theodizee gewinnt. Die Untersuchung versucht, den Gedankengang von Schellings Schrift zu rekonstruieren, auch Schwierigkeiten und Maengel mit Mitteln, die der Ansatz selbst bereitstellt, zu beheben, kommt aber zu dem Ergebnis, dass Schellings System nicht haltbar ist.

How to Do Public Policy offers a guide to students and practitioners on how to improve problem-solving with policies in a political world.
