ホッブズとロールズの欧州統合論
Rolf, Jan Niklas,
Hobbes and Rawls on European Integration: A Contractarian Perspective. (International Political Theory) 175 pp. 2025:10 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <754-9>
ISBN 978-3-031-96858-7 hard ¥34,646.- (税込) EUR 139.99
This book offers a contractarian reading of the European integration process that corroborates, complements and, on occasion, contests European integration theory. It argues that the social contract theories of Thomas Hobbes and John Rawls provide us with insufficiently exploited clues to the formation and justification of European supranational institutions and redistributive instruments. An advanced understanding of the normative foundations of European integration seems to be all the more important in times of multiple crises, differentiated integration and even disintegration - all accompanied and accelerated by the growth of Euroscepticism and anti-European parties.

パレートの社会・政治思想入門
Barbieri, Giovanni,
An Introduction to Pareto's Social and Political Thought. 158 pp. 2025:9 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <754-599>
ISBN 978-3-031-95411-5 hard ¥29,696.- (税込) EUR 119.99
This book analyses Pareto's social and political thought a hundred years after his death, showing how the structure of the scholar's works is generally quite clear (contrary to what is commonly presumed), and how the maintenance of the social and political systems' equilibrium represents Pareto's main research focus . In particular, the aim of this book is to demonstrate how the author considers the 'right middle path' - in the social, economic, and political arenas - as the only way capable of ensuring social cohesion. The book will be of interest to scholars and researchers of sociology, sociological and political theory, and political science.

マキァヴェッリとグイッチャルディーニの貴族レジームの批判
Jurdjevic, Mark,
The Many and the Few: Machiavelli and Guicciardini's Critique of Aristocratic Regimes. (Toronto Italian Studies) 277 pp. 2025:11 (U. Toronto Pr., CN) <754-601>
ISBN 978-1-4875-6686-9 hard ¥18,045.- (税込) US$ 85.00
The Many and the Few reconstructs a pattern of recurring populist themes in the writings of Francesco Guicciardini and Niccolo Machiavelli. These two pioneering thinkers of the late Renaissance are almost always presented in terms of dramatic contrasts - while Machiavelli's violent populism and scorn for aristocratic culture is well established, many consider Guicciardini the most influential Renaissance advocate of narrow, elitist regimes. In The Many and the Few, Mark Jurdjevic challenges these pre-existing beliefs and argues that Guicciardini was a vastly more complex thinker who subjected his own aristocratic ideals to devastating scrutiny. From his very first to very last texts, Guicciardini consistently embedded an alternate narrative in which he thoroughly embraced, and arguably exceeded, Machiavelli's view of the innately positive qualities of the people and destructive qualities of the elites. Subsequent "republican" writers, such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau and James Madison, all claimed Guicciardini as one of the chief Renaissance exemplars of a longstanding tradition of aristocratic, senatorial politics, but The Many and the Few demonstrates that Guicciardini's contribution was a Trojan horse: it appeared to confirm this tradition even while affirming every aspect of Machiavelli's critique.

プラトンとアリストテレスにおける友愛の政治学
Sampson, Kristin / Wiese Twedt, Oda Elisabeth (eds.),
Politics of Friendship in Plato and Aristotle. 208 pp. 2025:10 (Springer, GW) <754-16>
ISBN 978-3-031-94829-9 hard ¥21,034.- (税込) EUR 84.99
This anthology argues that ideas of friendship and its significance for the political in the ancient world is of relevance for contemporary thinking on the relationship between politics and friendship. It suggests a potential return to Ancient Greece, the birthplace of democracy, and more specifically the political thinking of Plato and Aristotle. This volume covers two quite opposite views on friendship and politics. Seen from one perspective friendship may pose a danger towards the political entity. Alternatively, it can be said to provide a necessary foundation for the political. While most treatments of the ancients on friendship are centered on the study of Aristotle, this volume offers a number of works on Plato. The contributions herein investigate the various ways these views are expressed within the thinking of Plato and Aristotle and their impact on contemporary discussions of the political. This book appeals to all students and scholars of Ancient Philosophy, particularly those interested in the political and social world of the ancient Greeks.

Bryar, Timothy,
A Lacanian-Hegelian Perspective on Peace and Conflict Studies. (Rethinking Peace and Conflict Studies) 92 pp. 2025:8 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <754-22>
ISBN 978-3-031-95749-9 hard ¥9,896.- (税込) EUR 39.99
This book takes a ground-breaking approach to peace theory and practice at a time of multiplying global crises. It draws on the Lacanian-Hegelian dialectical materialism to rethink the way we think peace, conflict and violence as amongst multiple, overlapping crises including climate change, contemporary conflict, the threat of nuclear war, pandemics, the rise of far-right racism and growing class divisions. Such an approach may seem surprising. While Lacanian-Hegelian scholars have provided analyses of contemporary conflicts including Russia's war on Ukraine and Israel's war against Hamas, in doing so they have also made pointedly critiqued the theory and practice of peace. Rather than simply defend peace theory and practice, the book uses these critiques as the basis for rethinking peace and conflict. Therefore, the book occupies a unique position by being the first to apply Lacanian-Hegelian dialectical materialism to peace and conflict theory and practice broadlyIn doing so, it provides scholars, students and practitioners with new concepts and tools to rethink peace theory and practice - and to engage with politics in an age fraught with crises.
