Callaci, Brian,
Chains of Command: The Rise and Cruel Reign of the Franchise Economy. 264 pp. 2026:4 (U. Chicago Pr., US) <759-386>
ISBN 978-0-226-82870-1 hard ¥5,582.- (税込) US$ 25.00
A surprising look at the big business of owning small businesses and what America's franchise economy means for its workers. Walk into a McDonald's anywhere in the United States, and it will be identical to every other McDonald's in the country. Yet, that particular store is almost certainly owned and operated by an "independent" franchisee. While McDonald's presents an image of centralized uniformity to the consumer, it shows a different face to the small business owners operating its stores under its control and the workers preparing its product to its standards. How then does McDonald's-and its big business peers-manage to be two things at once? In this revelatory work, economist Brian Callaci shows how franchisors have altered the legal treatment of corporations in their favor through a decades-long crusade of lobbying and litigation. Their efforts subsequently unleashed a slew of legal and economic sins upon the US economy and labor force, allowing multinational corporations to control continent-spanning empires while outsourcing employment and scapegoating legal responsibilities onto small businesses. The result: the unfettered growth of some of America's most recognizable businesses, at the aggregate expense of America's workers. Remarkable in both its scale and synthesis, Callaci's story is the first chronicle of this business movement-initially resisted by US courts before experiencing a dramatic reversal of fortune after decades of campaigning by some of America's most established entrepreneurs. An urgent and erudite history, Chains of Command reveals how the US labor market was tamed one small business at a time.

Leadership, Management and AI. (Routledge Studies in Leadership Research) 182 pp. 2026:3 (Routledge, UK) <759-387>
ISBN 978-1-041-16306-0 hard ¥46,035.- (税込) GB£ 155.00
This book is about the future of leadership and organisations with the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in the business ecosystem. The book, from the perspective of academic inquiries, suggests that the emergence of AI as a transformative force in business calls for redefining traditional competitive and leadership theories and frameworks. The manuscript puts forward the alternative versions of classic business, technological and economic models like Porter's Five Forces model, NASA's technology maturity model of Technology Readiness Level and the classic economic theory of division of labour. The work discusses the developing norms and contours of human-AI workforce integration and the challenges that leadership will encounter to realign the corporate strategies with AI to emerge it as a critical cog that will drive innovation, growth and stakeholder value. The book, while revealing the critical role of AI in driving business growth, will also put forward the new set of competencies necessary for next-generation leadership to manage AI-driven corporate functions. With the integration of AI in organisational hierarchy, leadership needs to deliberate on what to delegate and how much to delegate to AI for the decision-making process and what kind of firewalls would be required to have oversight on AI and move towards developing and deploying 'Responsible AI'.

In today's unpredictable market environment, companies struggle to maintain long- term competitiveness, leading them to prioritize innovation as a key success factor. Innovation has become essential for organizational strategy and culture. Increasingly, innovation connects with corporate social responsibility, addressing social and environmental challenges alongside efficiency improvements. The fast- moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector, characterized by frequently purchased, low-priced products, presents unique innovation challenges. An Integrated Approach to Innovation Management: A Corporate Social Responsibility Perspective focuses on product innovation management in the FMCG sector, particularly disruptive innovation - one of today's most significant management concepts valued for its practical business relevance. Innovative offerings provide consumers with alternative benefit packages while challenging established market players. These innovations can transform from niche solutions to mass-market alternatives through new value configurations.Systematizing knowledge about the growing role of trade in economic development, the book provides practical insights about making development decisions. National Culture and Corporate Responses to Climate Change. 222 pp. 2026:2 (Routledge, UK) <759-402>
ISBN 978-1-032-34426-3 hard ¥46,035.- (税込) GB£ 155.00
This book analyzes the impact of national culture on a range of corporate carbon practices in major economies since the Paris Agreement. It does so by exploring the interaction between hard institutions such as carbon policies and regulation and soft institutions such as national culture. The book focuses on national culture as a key factor in corporate decarbonization practices, one traditionally overlooked by analytical frameworks rooted in economic development, laws and regulation. It argues that fighting climate change requires collaboration from organisations in countries with diverse cultures. Managers and various stakeholders who exert significant influence over climate actions are likely to respond to a climate threat in accordance with their cultural prescriptions towards risk, regulation, environmental stewardship and stakeholder engagement. Analysing a large, cross-country dataset covering firms from both developing and emerging companies, the book analyses firm-level decisions, behaviours, strategies and outcomes related to decarbonization. It finds that corporate decisions to decarbonize are influenced not just by formal institutions such as macrolevel regulations, climate standards and policies, but softer institutions such as national culture which either facilitate or constrain a firm's ability to adopt effective climate strategies. The book highlights the importance of context-sensitive climate governance and closes by outlining areas of future research.Sitting at the intersection of cultural studies and corporate environmental governance, this book will interest researchers and policy makers working on sustainability, accounting and environmental management.

社会的責任投資が機能しない理由とその直し方
Swanson, Brad,
Profit vs. Progress: Why Socially Responsible Investment Doesn't Work and How to Fix It. 192 pp. 2026:3 (MIT Pr., US) <759-411>
ISBN 978-0-262-05159-0 hard ¥6,240.- (税込) US$ 27.95
Why socially responsible investment promises to make investors richer and the world better but fails at both. Wall Street thrives by telling investors that clever financial strategies can reverse the trade-off between corporate profits and social progress. But the link between greater corporate social responsibility and improved financial performance is an illusion. Profit vs. Progress dissects the massive $30 trillion socially responsible or sustainable finance industry and finds the emperor has no clothes. At best, sustainable investing typically delivers average rates of financial and social returns. But it makes social and environmental crises harder to overcome, by using financial gimmickry to distract our attention from real solutions. Author Brad Swanson argues that corporations in competitive markets act without moral values, and ethical investment can t prod them to greater social responsibility. The only way to change the outcome of the game is to change the rules. The solutions will have to come from legislatures, not corporate boardrooms. Swanson calls for public policies to make businesses better serve all of society, not just their shareholders without blunting their edge. His recommendations include breaking up the cartel of large asset managers, rebuilding the influence of organized labor, curbing the rapacious behavior of the private equity industry, and eliminating the conflict of interest that pits corporate directors against the greater good of the community. The author shows that in previous eras of social crisis caused by corporate excess, meaningful reforms emerged through the political process. Today as well, the path forward is clear if we have the will to follow it.

Spanning a stellar career as the leader of large organisations across government, industry and education, Sir Alan Wilson has developed a deep insight into what 'actually' works in practice through the lens of systems analysis.Leaders and managers face daily challenges but need to articulate and communicate their objectives and plans for the longer term in a complex and rapidly changing environment. In the first part, five key elements of the framework are demonstrated in successive chapters: systems and the 'big picture'; strategy; finance; structures; and integrating through 'making things work'. The second part reveals the urgent challenges that translate from the global and international through to national and local scales: climate change and sustainability, security, pandemics, and social inclusion. The evolution of technology, artificial intelligence, and data science demand stronger strategies, leadership, and management across all organisations at all scales. This book responds to this need by providing international case studies, a unique framework, and references to out-of-the-box thinking that can be applied to a variety of circumstances.Leading and Management is a valuable resource for leaders and managers at all levels in any kind of organisation, particularly in universities, local authorities, government departments, industry, and those responsible for managing research.

ISBN 978-1-032-85055-9 hard ¥15,737.- (税込) GB£ 52.99 *
This book offers a critical and transdisciplinary rethinking of project management in the creative industries. Bridging theory and practice, it explores how traditional approaches can be adapted, enriched, or challenged to better respond to the complex, uncertain, and value-driven nature of contemporary creative work. Each chapter explores project management theory through clearly articulated frameworks from major schools of thought, referencing key scholarly contributions. These theoretical discussions are complemented by real-world examples from an experienced creative industries project manager, creating a dialogue between academic rigor and practical relevance. The text critically examines traditional project management assumptions, offering conceptual resources to reimagine project management as a collaborative, reflexive space for meaning-making. Drawing on provocative frameworks like the Scandinavian School and Making Projects Critical, alongside insights from design and the social sciences, it proposes integrative models that balance organizational efficiency with the unique values, rhythms, and processes inherent to creative practice. The dual approach of theoretical depth paired with practitioner wisdom equips readers with both intellectual understanding and practical tools to navigate the complexities of managing innovative projects. The result is a fresh perspective that honors the distinctive characteristics of creative work while maintaining necessary structure and direction.Managing Projects in the Creative Industries is intended for researchers, students, project management professionals, and practitioners in the cultural and creative industries who seek to enrich their practices, challenge dominant norms, and develop more human-centered, critical, and context-sensitive approaches.

ISBN 978-1-4214-5302-6 paper ¥5,793.- (税込) US$ 25.95
A practical guide to making data capacity accessible, meaningful, and empowering in nonprofits. In today's nonprofit landscape, the language of data is everywhere. Leaders are urged to be data-driven, but for many small and mid-sized organizations, the idea of working with data is as intimidating as it is essential. Some feel overwhelmed by the demand to build reliable systems for reporting and analysis, while others are buried under numbers they cannot organize into meaningful insights. In Data Party, T'Pring R. Westbrook and Allison K. Holmes bring fresh perspective to what it means for nonprofits to strengthen their data capacity. Through real-world examples, sharp analysis, and a keen understanding of organizational challenges, the authors reveal how data can become less of a source of anxiety and more of a tool for learning, accountability, and growth. Rather than treating data as an abstract or technical puzzle, Westbrook and Holmes emphasize its role in shaping equitable practices and supporting mission-driven work. They show how organizations can move beyond fear and frustration to create systems that are not only functional but empowering. Their approach highlights the connections among good data practice, effective communication, and sustainable impact. Data Party speaks directly to leaders, staff, and partners navigating the complexities of today's information-oriented environment. It provides a language and framework that make data capacity approachable while never losing sight of the broader values that drive nonprofit missions. For anyone invested in using information to make better decisions and deepen community impact, this book is an invaluable resource.
