de Marneffe, Peter,
The Myth of Classical Liberalism: How Political Identity Evolves. (Palgrave Studies in Classical Liberalism / Palgrave Pivot) 108 pp. 2026:1 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <766-150>
ISBN 978-3-032-14318-1 hard ¥10,556.- (税込) EUR 39.99
This short, engaging book challenges the widely held belief that 'classical liberalism' is the original and authentic form of liberalism. The book argues that this narrative - often used to position libertarianism as the true liberal tradition and social democratic liberalism as a distortion - is built on historical misunderstandings of the terms 'liberal' and 'liberalism'. Focusing on English and American contexts, the book uses primary sources to show that the free-market doctrines of Adam Smith, later interpreted by thinkers like Hayek and Friedman as libertarian principles, should not be conflated with liberalism. Instead, liberalism first emerged in nineteenth-century England as a political philosophy rooted in constitutionalism and republicanism. The book also examines how Franklin D. Roosevelt reshaped American political language by associating "liberals" with New Deal supporters and "conservatives" with its opponents. By exploring these two pivotal moments and the broader political and economic history that connects them, de Marneffe redefines classical liberalism and critiques rigid interpretations of liberal thought. This book will appeal to scholars of politics, philosophy, economics, and the history of ideas.

Eucken, Walter,
Gesammelte Schriften.: Briefe 1933-1945. Hrsg. von U. Dathe. (Walter Eucken, Gesammelte Schriften III/2) 650 S. 2026:5 (Mohr, GW) <766-151>
ISBN 978-3-16-164551-8 hard ¥39,336.- (税込) EUR 149.00

Pasinetti, Luigi L.,
A Labour Theory of Value. 500 pp. 2026:7 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <766-152>
ISBN 978-1-009-69484-1 hard ¥10,738.- (税込) GB£ 34.99
Luigi L. Pasinetti was one of the most significant figures in the history of post-Keynesian economics. In his final book, he reflects on the history and future of post-Keynesian economics, as well as a broad range of issues relating to his previous work. He argues that the economics profession has reached a critical impasse, unable to grasp the true nature of the unprecedented world we now inhabit. He examines how modern economic thought has diverged from addressing real-world challenges, challenging outdated frameworks to offer, instead, a path for reflection and reorientation. With a rigorous critique of prevailing paradigms, Pasinetti proposes an alternative framework of analysis extending an invitation for economists to rethink foundational assumptions. Providing his final statement on these issues, this book delivers a compelling critique of the current state of economics and political economy and offers a vital contribution for reimagining these disciplines in extraordinary times.

Reisman, David,
Economy and Utopia: More to Morris. 218 pp. 2026:4 (E. Elgar, UK) <766-153>
ISBN 978-1-0353-6860-0 hard ¥29,155.- (税込) GB£ 95.00
In this insightful book, David Reisman examines the various notions of a utopia that emerged in opposition to feudalism and capitalism between the publication of Thomas More's Utopia in 1516 and William Morris's News from Nowhere in 1890. The book adopts an interdisciplinary approach to analysing the concept of a utopia, its sources and roots and the spectrum of thought surrounding how it should be created. Reisman evaluates the ideas of renowned and lesser-known authors such as Francis Bacon, Henri de Saint-Simon, Gerrard Winstanley, Etienne Cabet, James Harrington and Edward Bellamy, who imagined an earthly paradise to replace social division and economic underperformance. The book explores science, communism, cooperation, citizenship, the constitution and the dystopia of control. It shows how utopian ideals continue to challenge narrow individualism. Providing a unique depth of coverage in this field, Reisman assesses how market exchange, cut-throat competition and private property would yield to a new and more communitarian approach to life and work.Economy and Utopia is a crucial resource for students and scholars of economics and finance, political theory, public policy and philosophy. Its focus on past efforts to improve society will also benefit researchers in history and sociology.

Schneebeck, Christian,
Emil Lederer (1882 - 1939): Eine Biographie. (Studien zur Geschichte und Theorie des Kapitalismus) 580 S. 2026:5 (Mohr, GW) <766-154>
ISBN 978-3-16-200345-4 hard ¥34,320.- (税込) EUR 130.00
Emil Lederer, born in 1882 in Pilsen, ranks among the most influential economists and social scientists of his time. Christian Schneebeck provides the first comprehensive biography of Lederer. He traces Lederer's thought and intellectual development, as well as the formative influences on him, and repeatedly brings the person himself to the fore between work and theory. The author presents Lederer as an innovative, multifaceted, and still contemporary thinker whose scholarly ethos demands publicly advocating the insights he has gained. Lederer's intellectual formation took place around the turn of the century in Vienna, shaped by Marxism and marginal utility theory. Early on, he engaged at the intersection of scholarship and politics. As editorial secretary and later managing editor, he decisively shaped the Archiv fuer Sozialwissenschaft und Sozialpolitik. At the same time, he was active in Heidelberg, where he built influential circles of scholars and students. He repeatedly assumed political and academic responsibilities-serving on wartime economic commissions, socialization committees, and as a visiting professor in Tokyo. He examined the First World War intensively, not only in a now-famous essay on the sociology of war. Lederer also devoted himself early to the new business cycle theory, which made him a widely cited reference thinker in economics during the 1920s. And when Lederer, a converted Jew and outspoken socialist, fled to the United States in 1933 to escape the National Socialists, he examined from exile the characteristics and mechanisms of modern totalitarianism. Lederer died in 1939 in American exile.
