The Albanian Language Area and its Surroundings from Late Antiquity to the High Middle Ages: Proceedings of the 7th German-Albanian Cultural Studies Conference (21.-22. April 2023, Hubmersberg/Pommelsbrunn). (Albanische Forschungen 50) 488 S. 2024:3 (O. Harrassowitz, GW) <725-1378>
ISBN 978-3-447-12164-4 hard ¥23,500.- (税込) EUR 98.00
This publication, edited by Bardhyl Demiray, includes the proceedings of the 7th German-Albanian Cultural Studies Conference, which took place on April 21?22, 2023 in Hubmersberg near Pommelsbrunn (Bavaria). It was very well received thanks to the participation of top-class researchers from 22 teaching and research centers from Western and Eastern Europe. The conference continued the successful series of conferences that the Institute for Comparative and Indo-European Linguistics and Albanian Studies (LMU Munich) has been organizing every three years since 2003. The conference was dedicated to the general topic of The Albanian Language Area and its Surroundings from Late Antiquity to the High Middle Ages and focused on the latest developments that are currently shaping Albanian Studies as a regional and interdisciplinary research discipline, as well as on the discussion and exchange of opinions in the empirically and theoretically identification of separate research areas, such as the language, culture and history of the Albanians and their neighbors. Despite the colorful and multi-layered nature of the topic and the interdisciplinary approaches to analysis, the 20 contributions to the conference proceedings cover all the pillars of this complex discipline. Among others, the following research areas are specifically addressed: Archeology and Medieval Studies, Historical Linguistics and Philology, Language Contact and Areal Typology, Cultural Studies and Ethnolinguistics, Population Genetics and Historical Anthropology.

A Glossary of Old Syrian. Volume 2: l - z. (Languages of the Ancient Near East 8/2) 530 pp. 2024 (Eisenbrauns, US) <725-1397>
ISBN 978-1-64602-280-9 hard ¥24,521.- (税込) US$ 117.95 *
A Glossary of Old Syrian: l-z is the second of two volumes that aim to map the lexicon of Old Syrian as it can be extracted and reconstructed from the (Old Akkadian) Eblaite through the Old and Middle Babylonian corpora.Referring to a continuum of dialects spoken in the Syrian-Levantine and Syrian-Mesopotamian regions through the third and second millennia BCE, "Old Syrian" is a diachronically conservative, geographically pluricentric, and pragmatically multilayered linguistic cluster. As such, the Glossary pays special attention to the distribution of lexical data along diachronic, diatopic, and diastratic criteria. Given the extent and widely dispersed nature of this data, entries are supported by the most representative corpora of the Old Syrian linguistic landscape. Each entry is headed by an etymon, a kind of prelinguistic consonantal skeleton, and further information about different lexemes, their roots, and their derivations is provided in subentries. As the lexicography of Old Syrian remains uncertain, the Glossary includes leading interpretative opinions alongside the most relevant Semitic material to corroborate the lexical choices it adopts. Bibliographical references are succinct and restricted, as a rule, to texts easily found in any Assyriological or Semitic library.Intended as a reference work in support of future study, A Glossary of Old Syrian offers a clear view of the state of the field.

German Syntax: A Structure Removal Approach. (Cambridge Studies in Linguistics) 372 pp. 2024:10 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <725-1604>
ISBN 978-1-009-51803-1 hard ¥31,460.- (税込) GB£ 110.00 *
Exploring the major syntactic phenomena of German, this book provides a state-of-the-art account of German syntax, as well as an outline of the key aspects of Chomsky's Minimalist Program. It is one of the first comprehensive studies of the entire syntactic component of a natural language within the Minimalist Program, covering core issues including clause structure, binding, case, agreement, control, and movement. It introduces a phase-based theory of syntax that establishes Remove, an operation that removes syntactic structure, as a mirror image of Merge, which builds syntactic structure. This unified approach resolves many cases of conflicting structure assignments in syntax, as they occur with passivization, restructuring, long-distance passivization, complex prefields, bridge verbs, applicatives, null objects, pseudo-noun incorporation, nominal concord, and ellipsis. It will pave the way for similar research into other languages and is essential reading for anyone interested in the syntax of German, syntactic theory, or the Minimalist Program.

Language and Security: The Language of Securitization in Contemporary Slovak Public Discourse. (Studies in Linguistics, Anglophone Literatures and Cultures 41) 152 pp. 2024:4 (P. Lang, SZ) <725-1608>
ISBN 978-3-631-91368-0 hard ¥14,801.- (税込) SFR 58.00
Monograph focuses on the analysis of securitizing speech acts produced by major actors in Slovak public discourse, primarily left and right populists. In the case studies attention is centered on the nature of produced utterances, especially at the lexical level, with an emphasis on speech tactics and discourse strategies. With these intentions in mind, the researchers investigate how alleged threats are verbalized, which linguistic devices the producers of threat articulations most frequently employ in presenting them, and what persuasive effects can result from their usage. The authors also focused their research on metaphors and used the tools of corpus linguistics in their analysis. This research falls within the fields of political linguistics and linguistic pragmatics. In their analyses, the authors focus on pressing social issues such as migration, the war in Ukraine, public health issues, economic crisis, and other 'pre-election' populist topics.

Liang, Haiyan,
The Perception and Acquisition of Chinese Polysemy. (Contemporary Studies in Descriptive Linguistics 56) 260 pp. 2024:3 (P. Lang, SZ) <725-1619>
ISBN 978-1-80374-278-6 paper ¥18,884.- (税込) SFR 74.00
Polysemous lexical items have multiple senses associated with a single form, and these senses are interrelated. Polysemy is a universal and omnipresent phenomenon, providing a robust tool to convey creatively our ideas and thoughts. As a result, polysemy presents challenges for second language (L2) learners. Existing studies on the issue of polysemy in language acquisition often rely on researchers’ subjective understandings of the network of meanings around a lexical item or focus on English examples. Yet Chinese lexis exhibits greater polysemy than English and deserves its own examination. This book takes one Chinese polysemous item as an example to explore how native (L1) speakers and L2 learners perceive its multiple senses as well as how these senses are acquired by L2 learners. This book also investigates the predictive strengths of various factors that contribute to the acquisition pattern. A multidisciplinary approach is adopted to achieve these objectives, including methods from cognitive linguistics, psycholinguistics, and corpus linguistics.

ドイツ語の教授ハンドブック
Whittle, Ruth (ed.),
The Routledge Handbook of German Language Teaching. 352 pp. 2024:9 (Routledge, UK) <725-1625>
ISBN 978-0-367-33221-1 hard ¥65,780.- (税込) GB£ 230.00 *
The Routledge Handbook of German Language Teaching evaluates and addresses multifaceted, multilevel needs of students and teachers within teaching German as a foreign, as well as a second, language through taking a transcultural approach. Each contribution starts with the author situating themselves in the geographical and institutional context in which they teach as well as the way in which they teach, for example, in person or online. This acknowledges the Handbook's internationally widespread contributors, from countries with different histories in terms of cultural, linguistic and educational diversity more generally and the teaching of German in particular. The chapters reflect their voices and consider language learners as people who have their own identities.Material such as plays, poems, short literary texts, rap, singing and drawing are discussed in this book as being influential for language learners from beginner level and beyond. This book proposes that 'learning' happens by both the teachers and the learners going on a journey and both changing the outlook on each other and themselves along that journey. Alongside this, questions are asked with respect to curricula and the relation between speaking German and 'belonging' in a German-speaking country. This Handbook will primarily appeal to teachers and instructors of German, as well as those training to become German language instructors. Moreover, the book will appeal to researchers interested in the linguistic and theoretical aspects of German language teaching.

Ethnographic texts in the Bathari language of Oman. (Semitica Viva 63) XVI, 792 S. 2024:5 (O. Harrassowitz, GW) <725-1634>
ISBN 978-3-447-12084-5 hard ¥37,888.- (税込) EUR 158.00
Ba??ari, called B??a?r?t by its speakers, is one of the six unwritten Semitic languages of southern Arabia. It is no longer a living language, and today only a handful of older people still speak it. The B????ira were the indigenous inhabitants of the drier areas of Dhofar. Displaced by more powerful incomers, they ended up in this infertile strip of shoreline. Their own migration history recalls a time when their number was greater, but today they are a small tribe, settled in the new towns of Sharbithat and Ashwaymiyah on the coast, or in Zakhr in the desert plateau above. In this book some 400 texts from this remote and marginalised community are presented in B??a?r?t transcription and English translation, documented through field recordings or by oral transmission directly to the author. The purpose of the recordings, spanning the period from 1976 to 2016, was to study their way of life prior to 1970 and the accession of Sultan Qaboos, when so much changed. The author asked about specific skills, encouraged speakers to reminisce about their past and to recall stories they used to tell. Those who generously shared their memories were all elderly, the product of an earlier oral culture. Formerly, their survival depended on harvesting the sea. Before the dugout canoe, they fished by swimming out to sea on inflated goatskins. The small numbers of goats they raised were therefore as important for their skins as for their meat and milk. The community was largely self-sufficient; they had a wealth of specialist knowledge about the sea and the fauna and flora of their area. It was this expertise that enabled them to extract sustenance from such a harsh and unforgiving environment.
