Hanging in the Balance: The Function of Justification in Achieving Women's Equality. 240 pp. 2025:10 (Hart, UK) <757-759>
ISBN 978-1-5099-6787-2 hard ¥26,235.- (税込) GB£ 90.00
This book gives the first in-depth assessment of how justification functions when women are claiming their right to equality. How can courts assess whether a proposed limit to women's equality is constitutionally justified? This question is rarely explicitly asked, with the assumption that well-established limitation frameworks, such as proportionality, are able to assess whether limits to women's rights are justified. However, delving into the theory and practice of justification reveals fracture points between the dominant approach to justification and women's rights to equality. One of its distinctive characteristics is the question of whether any analytical entwining or unwinding of equality and justification enhances the protection of women's rights to equality in constitutional democracies. It proposes a novel asymmetric relationship between equality and justification that requires innovative methodological approaches that enrich the task of adjudicating limits to women's equality. This is an intriguing, articulate and compelling examination of a question with real and applied significance to all those working on human rights and equality.

Five Evil Women: Hindley, West, Wuornos, Homolka, Tucker. 344 pp. 2026:3 (Reaktion Books, UK) <757-849>
ISBN 978-1-83639-174-6 hard ¥5,830.- (税込) GB£ 20.00
Why do certain women become icons of evil? This book offers the first comparative, non-sensationalist account of five of the most reviled women in the modern Anglophone world: Myra Hindley, Rosemary West, Aileen Wuornos, Karla Homolka and Karla Faye Tucker. It examines their lives, crimes and cultural reception in the UK, USA and Canada, asking how violence committed by women is understood, judged and remembered. Going beyond moral outrage or tabloid headlines, the book explores how concepts of 'evil' are shaped by history, belief systems and social context. Through historical and ethical reflections, it offers a deeper, more critical engagement with female violence, and considers how society should respond to those who commit acts of unimaginable harm.

Renowned feminist development scholar Wendy Harcourt offers the first incisive open access overview of how the lively feminist debates on care, in both minority and majority worlds, are crucial for critical development studies.Adopting an intentionally open and readable style to ensure its technical terms are understood, each chapter starts by narrating nonfictional, on-the-ground stories-stories selected from different places, peoples, and histories-in order to show how care is understood in feminist economic debates on key subjects such as social reproduction analysis; interspecies relations in posthumanism; environmental justice in feminist political ecology; and reciprocity and accountability in postdevelopment and decolonialism. In each chapter, these sketches are then fleshed out through a critical survey of influential thinkers and activists who adopt ecofeminist, feminist political ecology, critical indigenous studies, transition studies, postdevelopment, and decolonial approaches to development. This book-alongside the illustrations, vlogs, and social-media messaging that accompany it online- provides researchers, students, practitioners, and activists with the tools to explain why care is such a crucial concept for critical development discourse. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Migration and Social Reproduction: Critical Junctions between Labour, Border and Reproductive Struggles. 218 pp. 2025:12 (E. Elgar, UK) <757-384>
ISBN 978-1-0353-5689-8 hard ¥26,235.- (税込) GB£ 90.00
This timely book examines the unique relationship between migration, labour, and social reproduction in light of current global crises. Leading experts outline how border processes, precarious welfare states, labour markets and gendered and racialised conventions influence the labour and social reproduction of migrant workers.Contributing authors present empirical findings from research conducted in a variety of contexts, exploring the struggles and opportunities of different groups of migrant workers: from female nurses in India to workers impacted by the dormitory regimes and remote platform work in Eastern and Southern Europe. They advocate for a more inclusive definition of reproductive labour, highlighting how states and employers manage mobility at work while foregrounding migrants' everyday strategies - both collective and individual - of survival, resistance, and care. Concluding with a postface written by eminent luminaries of the field, Sandro Mezzadra and Brett Neilson, this book demonstrates that social reproduction is critical to a transnational future of emancipation, liberation and social justice.Migration and Social Reproduction is a valuable resource for scholars and students in the field of social science, namely sociology, social policy, politics, migration studies, and race studies. The empirical research presented in this book will also be of great benefit to policy researchers and practitioners.

Emotions, Bodies, and Identities in the Hair and Beauty Salon: Caring Beyond Skin Deep. 256 pp. 2026:1 (Bloomsbury Academic, UK) <757-392>
ISBN 978-1-6669-4583-6 hard ¥26,235.- (税込) GB£ 90.00
Hair and beauty salons are a common feature of daily life, with salons seemingly on every street corner. What are we to make of this demand? Drawing on ethnographic and other methods, Emotions, Bodies, and Identities in the Hair and Beauty Salon suggests that salons are about more than just simply maintaining appearances. This book argues that salons are about care work, which involves responding to emotions through talk, managing bodies through touch, and curating identities through aesthetics. While feminists have long identified the impositions of ideals pushed by the beauty industry, there has been less attention to generative aspects of beauty culture. This book tries to put the care involved in salon work on the radar, examining how workers manage talk and their therapeutic-like roles, touch and physical intimacy, and identities via the curation of surfaces in the salon. In a context where visits to salons are often described by clients as "self-care", this book is a reminder that someone else is often doing the work. This book highlights how salon workers provide clients with care that is often profoundly meaningful in terms of responding to emotions, bodies, and identities, and that this is indeed labour that ought to be valued and supported accordingly.

What impact does war have on women's well-being? War is far more likely to occur in countries where women lack equal standing in society. When those wars occur, the effects are also gendered. If gender inequality is affected by both the causes and impacts of armed conflict, we need to think about the implications of this interrelationship. Focusing on gendered political inequality, this Element takes a large-N approach to exploring whether inequality variation in states at conflict leads to variation in women's health outcomes. By linking the two processes, the authors are able to directly account for the impact of political inequality on which countries participate in civil conflict when they estimate the impact of inequality on conflict consequences, particularly those relating to women's health.

Appleton, Nayantara S.,
Demographic Desires: Medicine, Media and Emergency Contraception in India. (Anthropology of Well-Being: Individual, Community, Society) 362 pp. 2025:10 (Bloomsbury Academic, UK) <757-414>
ISBN 978-1-6669-4664-2 hard ¥24,777.- (税込) GB£ 85.00
Through an exploration of the intertwined histories of hormonal contraception and population anxiety, in Demographic Desires: Medicine, Media, and Emergency Contraception in India, Appleton shows how historic discourses and practices of 'family planning' remerge today as desires of the Indian state and Indian women. In examining the relationship(s) between demographic desires of a nation, reproductive justice on the ground, and women's everyday material conditions, in this book, Appleton posits that under neoliberal regimes of 'empowered consumerism' Emergency Contraceptive Pills (ECPs) introduced as non-prescription pills in 2005 bring histories of demographic control projects and demographic anxieties into the present. The book highlights the nuances of demographic realities which are co-constituted through historical and contemporary narratives, media images, public policy, and medical discourse. Addressing recurring questions about demography, women's reproductive justice, and the visual manifestations of the neoliberal aspirations of Indians, this book contributes to conversations that provide an 'alter-narrative' to demographic anxieties as a theoretical framing. Appleton proposes that demographic desires exist not in opposition to demographic anxiety, but rather as vital adjacent project. Demographic Desires brings together debates in medical anthropology, media and cultural studies, and a feminist engagement on the medical, scientific, and cultural to showcase the myriad ways emergency contraception in India offers new opportunities for complicating the relationship between contraception, mediated medicine, and demography. The book highlights the nuances of demographic realities which are co-constituted through historical and contemporary narratives, media images, public policy, and medical discourse. Rev. Addington Hall, who helped lead the fight for the recognition of marriage equality, tells the riveting story of how the Episcopal Church became the largest U.S. denomination to officially sanction same-sex relationships and how this contentious issue has been used to further conservative political agendas, both in the United States and abroad. This revised and updated edition describes in vivid detail how African and Asian churches have been drawn into a conflict that began in the United States in the Episcopal Church, and raises vital questions of whether people with different understandings of authority and truth, from vastly different cultures, can live in harmony. Hall also describes the exodus of conservative Episcopal Churches that left the denomination in protest after the 2012 vote to form the separatist Anglican Church in North America, and the impact of this exodus on the identity, theology, politics, and activities the current Episcopal Church. In a stirring final chapter, Addington Hall lays out the challenges the Episcopal Church and the Anglican communion face in their attempt to talk, meet, and remain united. This is an ideal volume for anyone who wants to understand the historical and current divisions within the Episcopal Church and the broader Anglican Communion regarding sexuality, gender identity, and marriage equality.

Archaeology, the Bible, and Sex: A Psychological Analysis of Sex, Sexuality, and Gender in the Ancient Near East. 224 pp. 2026:1 (Bloomsbury Academic, UK) <757-207>
ISBN 978-1-6669-8015-8 hard ¥26,235.- (税込) GB£ 90.00
In Archaeology, the Bible, and Sex: A Psychological Analysis of Sex, Sexuality, and Gender in the Ancient Near East, Caleb Jacobson reinterprets biblical texts and archaeological artifacts to explore how ancient societies imagined, regulated, and ritualized sexuality. Moving beyond traditional readings that frame biblical laws as static moral codes, the book presents sex as a culturally embedded and psychologically meaningful construct-deeply tied to concerns of fertility, inheritance, kinship, power, and social order.Employing an interdisciplinary approach that integrates biblical studies, archaeology, and cognitive psychology, Jacobson draws on figurines, plaques, legal codes, and narrative texts to examine how concepts of gender and desire were visually encoded, socially enforced, and symbolically expressed. This cognitive-archaeological framework allows for a richer interpretation of biblical sexuality-one that acknowledges its complexity, its cultural logic, and its enduring influence.Written for scholars, clergy, therapists, and general readers alike, this book offers a compelling narrative of ancient sexual imagination. Through psychological insight and material analysis, Archaeology, the Bible, and Sex invites readers to confront ancient assumptions with clarity and curiosity-ultimately reframing how we understand the intersections of sex, sexuality, and gender.

Muers, Rachel,
On the Voices, Contexts and Tasks of Theology: Experiments in Quaker and Feminist Thought. 192 pp. 2025:11 (Bloomsbury T&T Clark, UK) <757-234>
ISBN 978-0-567-72125-9 hard ¥24,777.- (税込) GB£ 85.00
Who is Christian theology for, what is it for, and what can it do? Rachel Muers explores the voice of Christian theology - the relationship between the subject of theology and theological discourse. The book begins with the question 'how does someone speak of God?', understood not as a question about the criteria or authorised sources for theology, but as a question of what is going on when theology is done. How is it possible to speak as this particular historical embodied subject about God? Muers investigates voice through engagement with historical and contemporary theologians, particularly but not only with women who are speaking from relatively marginalised positions and contending with the lack of societal authorisation for their theological work. Recognising that the question of 'voice' is often equated in the contemporary context with the representation of identities and with how spaces and institutions can facilitate that representation, the narrative considers more directly how questions of identity and context - particularly in relation to gender - shape the construction and representation of systematic theology, and of theological tradition. Muers examines the vocation of theology, particularly in the contemporary Western academy and alongside other 'humanities' subjects, and a concluding chapter sets out a vision for ecumenical theological work. The book draws extensively on the author's own Quaker tradition and on her experience of teaching and mentoring theologians.

ISBN 978-1-350-50016-7 hard ¥24,777.- (税込) GB£ 85.00
With a vivid ethnographic lens on a Spanish village, Josep Almudever Chanza brings to life the resurgence of religion at the heart of European public life amid the global rise of neo-conservatism. This book reveals how faith, far from fading, is being reshaped, reclaimed, and reasserted as a powerful force in Europe's social, cultural, and political transformations.Through immersive fieldwork, including participant observation, oral histories, interviews, and archival digging, Almudever Chanza uncovers how villagers navigate and reinterpret religious rituals in everyday life. Faith emerges not as static tradition but as a living, contested space where the boundaries between secular and sacred, conservative and progressive, institutional and grassroots are constantly renegotiatedFrom material religious practices to the shifting role of the Catholic Church, each chapter explores how new forms of faith-based identity are being crafted on the ground. Central to the narrative is the question of gender: how are historically excluded voices, especially sexual and gender minorities, reshaping religious life from within?Boldly interdisciplinary, Almudever Chanza draws on feminist theory, critical theology, and cultural politics to challenge dominant narratives and offer a timely, provocative account of religion's evolving role in Europe today. This is not just a study of belief-it's a story of power, resistance, and transformation.

An empowering look at one of pop culture's most enduring feminist icons, The Wicked Witch of the West.More than 125 years after her introduction, the Wicked Witch of the West remains an icon of popular culture. Known by many names-from "The Wicked Witch of the West" to Evillene, Elphaba, and Theodora-she consistently defies expectations and wields her power unapologetically. At the heart of her everlasting appeal is her embodiment of feminist ideals that resonate today. In Wicked Witch of the West: The Enduring Legacy of a Feminist Icon, Lona Bailey explores the radical feministic undertones of one of the most enduring characters in popular culture. Introduced in 1900 through L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the Wicked Witch has captivated generations as both a symbol of fear and empowerment. More than just a villain, she embodies rebellion and resistance, refusing to conform to the roles historically assigned to women. This book traces her transformation over the past century, highlighting how she has evolved through countless adaptations from The Wizard of Oz to the film adaptation of Wicked while maintaining her core identity as a powerful, defiant figure. To understand why the Witch remains captivating more than a century after her creation, Bailey delves into the radical feminism underlying her character and examines how she has been reinterpreted since her debut. From the suffrage movement to the fight for reproductive rights, and from the #MeToo movement to ongoing battles against gender stereotypes, the Witch symbolizes the struggles and triumphs women face. Her presence transcends mere performance; she serves as a reminder that the fight for justice, equality, and autonomy continues. By exploring the Witch's feminist evolution, readers will gain insight into why her character resonates with generations of women.

Feminisms and Domesticity in Times of Crisis: The Rise of the Austerity Celebrity. (Library of Gender and Popular Culture) 256 pp. 2025:10 (Bloomsbury Academic, UK) <757-1562>
ISBN 978-1-350-33222-5 hard ¥24,777.- (税込) GB£ 85.00
How can we make sense of intensifying gender inequalities amid the growing visibility of popular, media-driven feminism? Can domestic cultures offer a space for feminist response and resistance to austerity?Feminisms and Domesticity in Times of Crisis seeks to address these questions, exploring how the revival of traditionally feminine domestic activities, such as crafting, baking and sewing exemplified by cultural figures such as the "trad-wife", has coincided with the re-politicisation and heightened visibility of domestic culture during an era of austerity. Jessica Martin offers an in-depth analysis of public figures who have forged 'austerity celebrity' personas that blend domesticity with activism, producing a popular but complex strand of neoliberal feminism.Examining figures like Kirstie Allsopp, Justine Roberts, Jen Gale, and anti-austerity blogger and cook Jack Monroe, Martin examines how each figure develops a distinct form of politicised domesticity. Their responses span the political spectrum-from Allsopp's promotion of the 'Big Society' and conservative individualism to Roberts' transformation of motherhood into parliamentary activism.Martin also considers how this nostalgic turn to domesticity intensified during the COVID-19 crisis, reinforcing narratives of white femininity, patriotic stoicism, and the so-called British blitz spirit, while helping to obscure the escalating inequalities of austerity-era Britain. Martin argues that the convergence of nostalgia and femininity has produced new discourses of performative thrift, feminized labour and aspirational domesticity which are key resources for the justification of austerity policy.

Through a comprehensive analysis of popular contemporary science fiction television series, this book underscores the genre's unique potential to both reflect and shape cultural perceptions of masculinity. Each of its essays, written by a host of international contributors, analyse key series ranging from Firefly (2002) to Star Trek: Picard (2020-23). Employing anti-patriarchal and pro-feminist perspectives, they scrutinize the limited diversity among male characters in science fiction television, shedding light on the underrepresentation of non-heteronormative, non-white, and transmasculine characters, while also highlighting notable exceptions such as Altered Carbon (2018-20), Doom Patrol (2019), and The Umbrella Academy (2019).Against the backdrop of current discussions regarding toxic masculinity, this book highlights the ways in which divergent masculinities shape and are shaped by the science fiction genre. In doing so, it argues the significant role played by the genre in ongoing discourse surrounding traditional and alternative forms of masculinity.

Tracing the adaptation histories of Leopold von Sacher-Masoch's novel Venus in Furs, Arthur Schnitzler's play La Ronde, and Frank Wedekind's play Lulu, Julian Preece explores how these works were censored, celebrated, and adapted for the screen from pre-World War I Austria to modern day United States.Through case studies of filmmakers like Max Ophuels, G.W. Pabst, and Roman Polanski, this book explores how directors have used sexual themes to push boundaries and critique societal norms. From Pandora's Box (1929) to La Ronde (1950), these films captured shifting attitudes toward sex, confronting issues such as Nazism, Hollywood censorship under the Hays Code, and the AIDS crisis. Preece also highlights how marginalised voices-particularly women and minorities-have fought for sexual rights on and off the screen. This compelling analysis will appeal to students, scholars, and general readers interested in the intersection of film, literature, and sexuality. Adapting Sex on Screen provides a nuanced and engaging look at how cinematic portrayals of sex have both reflected and shaped social change, making it an essential resource for understanding the ongoing cultural significance of these provocative works.

The Othered Woman: How White Feminism Harms Muslim Women. 288 pp. 2026:3 (Pluto Pr., UK) <757-1624>
ISBN 978-0-7453-5234-3 paper ¥4,369.- (税込) GB£ 14.99
'An urgent, vital contribution to the feminist conversation - one that tears through the comfortable myth of universal sisterhood' - Alya Mooro, author of The Greater Freedom Growing up, journalist Shahed Ezaydi was often asked how she could call herself a feminist and still practise her faith. It's a question that reveals a deeper issue that Muslim women often face: being ignored in feminist spaces entirely, or cast as passive victims in need of being saved. This mindset fuels gendered Islamophobia and a narrow white feminism. But Muslim women don't need rescuing. The Othered Woman is the book Ezaydi wishes her younger self could have turned to. It challenges the myths of how Muslim women are oppressed and who by, and shows that these myths translate into very real harm both in Britain and around the world, showcasing the voices of intersectional feminists who are fighting for liberation on their own terms. Accessible and compelling, this is urgent reading for anyone who considers themselves a feminist.

Why can't the Catholic Church fully accept gender diverse LGBTQI+ members as 'normal' Catholics, despite Pope Francis's compassion for the gay community? In this cutting-edge work, Ballano investigates how deductive moral frameworks and institutional homophobia play a key role in the social exclusion of the LGBTQI+ community in the Catholic Church. He traces the contours of this discrimination by using Francis's synodal theology as the primary conceptual framework along with sociological perspectives on gender, gender diversity, and morality. This volume aims to build sociological-synodal bridges for the full LGBTQI+ inclusion in the Catholic Church. It is sure to be valuable reading for church authorities, moral theologians, and LGBTQI+ leaders, as well as scholars and students of sociology, religion, theology, and gender studies.

Spaces for Resistance: Black Feminist Theory and Praxis in Academia and Beyond. 320 pp. 2026:2 (Bloomsbury Academic, UK) <757-1634>
ISBN 978-1-6669-6361-8 hard ¥27,692.- (税込) GB£ 95.00
Using autoethnography, this book answers the Black feminist call to talk back to systems of oppression and highlight agency and resistance of Black women.Editors Geniece Crawford Monde and Ebonie Cunningham Stringer explore the varied ways in which Black feminism is understood, applied, and expressed across disciplinary backgrounds. Drawing from the perspectives of both academics and scholar-practitioners, they examine how these paradigms bear relevance on timely issues, like socially-engaged scholarship, work-life balance, and navigating challenging social, academic, and political contexts. This book is divided into five thematic sections. Part one examines Black feminism as a tool for liberatory pedagogical praxis. Part two creates a space for Black women whose work and experiences both inform and extend the Black feminist perspective beyond the United States. Part three provides insight into the factors that shape Black women's most important relationships and the conflicting priorities that compete for their attention. Part four explores how Black women are able to incorporate their ideals into their professional workplace. Part five highlights the ways in which Black feminism emerges from and is sustained within communities. By bringing these perspectives together, Monde, Stringer, and the contributors critically examine the complex ways in which Black feminist scholarship has continued to shape our understanding of the world today.

Arab American Women, Identity, and Intersectionality extends postcolonial feminist theory to include intersectionally marginalized bodies in the classroom and in social science discourse. In a climate where the Arab, Muslim, woman's identity is both policed and politicized, Shakeir examines the ways in which Arab American Muslim women navigate the public space, from the university to their professional lives. Authenticity, self-policing, and performance are all examined intergenerationally, to reflect on the survivance of the Arab identity across both decades and oceans. The book acts equally as a methodological and instructional guide for students and theorists, and also uses first-person testimonials and stories from Arab American Muslim women for anyone willing to expand their perspective.

ISBN 978-1-041-14452-6 hard ¥42,267.- (税込) GB£ 145.00
Eliane Brault's book tells a remarkable story. Its audience includes not just scholars and university students, but everyone fascinated by the drama of the German invasion and occupation of France in World War II. For the first time, it is now available in English translation. This account of 1940 draws on Brault's extensive network of fellow journalists and social activists. The exceptionally well-informed author highlights the role played by defeatists and collaborators in the Fall of France and the creation of the Vichy Regime. She also details the unsung bravery of the French in the face of national calamity, one worsened by the internal divisions and venality of the Germans during the occupation.Brault's vibrant writing is rendered here with sensitivity. This Anglophone edition retains the originality of Brault's style, a unique hybrid of newspaper reporting, critical commentary, and personal reflection. Her book now joins the classic accounts in English of the same events by the historian Marc Bloch, the novelist Irene Nemirovsky, and the literary critic Jean Guehenno, however different the genres of writing they explored. Simply put, Brault's work richly deserves to be every bit as well-known as theirs.

How has 'gender' been created, understood and experienced in different cultures over the centuries? How have differently gendered people interacted with community, economy and power? With a focus going beyond western assumptions about categories of the self, this set seeks to recognize the wide diversity of approaches to human identity and behaviors. This ground-breaking open access collection tackles polarisations around sexualities and genders and in doing so, it opens out debates and discussions to reflect on how people live them, including and moving beyond social movements and political debates.Anti-gender and heteroactivist movements have become increasingly recognized as key political groups in the last decade, driving resistances that often respond to LGBTQI+ inclusion. How these divisions are felt and experienced is under-explored.Crossing a variety of geographical contexts, including India, USA, Canada, Ireland, and Great Britain, Polarising Sexualities and Genders brings together leading and emerging scholars in multiple disciplines to explore, theorise and hope for change in social, legal, and political sexual/gendered/LGBTQIA+ landscapes. Examples include polarisation in media coverage and legislative debates about gender and transgender rights in the US and UK, to the possibility of occupying a sexual borderlands, the changing language for LGBTQIA+identities within the US, and the ways in which new discourses emerge to capture sexual lives. Through these case studies, the book explores how polarizing discourses and sociopolitical landscape shape the lived experiences, divisions, and marginalizations among LGBTQIA+ people in places including Lithuania and the southern United States. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Gender and Memory in Hungary: From the Siege of Budapest to Present Day. 320 pp. 2026:4 (Bloomsbury Academic, UK) <757-1675>
ISBN 978-1-6669-7427-0 hard ¥23,320.- (税込) GB£ 80.00
Gender and Memory in Hungary: From the Siege of Budapest to Present Day examines the life stories of elderly Hungarian women through a person-centered approach from an anthropological perspective. Each woman crafts her narrative against the backdrop of significant historical events: World War II, the post-war period, the 1956 revolution, the Kadar era, and the shifts of post-communism leading into Goulash populism. These narratives not only mirror large historical signposts but also shed light on cultural patterns and unofficial microhistories that form a Chorus of Experiences-an intricate tapestry of diverse lived experiences, identity, and memory. The author uses anthropology to explore the nuances of personal stories, revealing insights about our shared human condition. By adopting this view, the text draws interesting parallels between Goulash populism and neo-revitalization movements, highlighting that while our history shapes the present, today's societal context also influences how we reinterpret the past.

Listening Like a Girl. 208 pp. 2026:7 (Pluto Pr., UK) <757-1678>
ISBN 978-0-7453-5193-3 paper ¥4,369.- (税込) GB£ 14.99
Defining femininity is an intriguing pursuit. Socially constructed and individually experienced, its definition changes across time and place. For some, it is found in the shape of the body or the length of the hair. For others, it is in the emotional response, a unique sensitivity and openness. For many, it suggests passivity. In Listening Like A Girl, Jules Joanne Gleeson argues that at the core of the feminine is the act of listening, and more to the point, listening more intently than those speaking. While society constructs listening as a form of passivity, it hides an inherent power as a highly skilled and competent act, capable of undermining patriarchal expectations. Extrapolating from this core observation, Gleeson takes the reader on a cultural and theoretical journey. Exploring figures from pop singer Troye Sivan to Jacqueline Rose, and discussing butch and bisexuality, as well as the links between femininity and communist politics, she ultimately lands on reflections on the tension between femininity and introspection.

ISBN 978-1-350-46949-5 hard ¥27,692.- (税込) GB£ 95.00
This book takes a queer linguistic and intersectional approach to the analysis of young LGBTQ+ people's identity constructions, showing how their language use reveals their marginalisation in society. The author develops a framework for an intersectional sociocultural linguistics (ISL) and applies it to linguistic ethnography with members of four LGBTQ+ youth groups in the UK. She shows how the young people's identities are informed by different intersecting categories (including race, class, and family situation) which influence their unique life experiences. She uses discourse analysis to explore the links between such intersections and the ways in which the young people position themselves in relation to each other, their youth group, and the wider world. In focusing on these individual, varied identity constructions, the book provides a unique, in-depth insight into the reality of being young and LGBTQ+ today. It also reveals the need for an intersectional approach when analysing marginalised groups.

ISBN 978-0-7453-5175-9 paper ¥5,826.- (税込) GB£ 19.99
At a time when trans rights are under attack across Britain and beyond, Deviants and Trailblazers arrives as a powerful antidote, uncovering a rich, overlooked history. Spanning from the first legal gender changes in 1944 and the devastating Corbett v. Corbett ruling in 1970, to the groundbreaking Gender Recognition Act of 2004 and the ongoing battle for reform today, this is a gripping chronicle of resistance and radical change. Far from being a recent invention or a niche concern, legal recognition of trans identities has been a demand of trans communities for generations. Rebecca Jane Morgan shows how that fight emerged, evolved, and was sustained by grassroots organising, court battles, and an unwavering demand by the trans community to be recognised by the very systems that so often try to erase them. In a moment defined by pseudoscience, moral panic, and political backlash, this authoritative and readable account of the movement to date offers clarity, context, and hope.

Exploiting, Enduring, & Resisting Ambiguous Sexual Consent in the Grey Area: Taking It. 288 pp. 2025:12 (Bloomsbury Academic, UK) <757-1695>
ISBN 978-1-6669-4826-4 hard ¥26,235.- (税込) GB£ 90.00
For decades, feminists have been educating young people about healthy sexual interactions, promoting the benefits of affirmative consent. College students know that "Yes means yes!" Yet rates of sexual assault on college campuses remain stable. What's going on? Despite concerted affirmative consent campaigns, coercive sexual intimacy and sexual assault persist, with some students (mostly men) still forcing sex on their partners-"taking it" from them. Facing ubiquitous sexual pressure, young people often relent to unwanted sex and "just take it." Outsiders pass judgement on victim/survivors, demanding, "It's just sex! Shut up and take it!" Survivors-despite their trauma-resist, "taking back" bodily empowerment. In this book, the authors conduct an intersectional analysis of data provided by a diverse group of college students to explore these four meanings of "taking it." They contextualize their analysis, examining the impact of sexual education in the U.S. as well as laws and policies aimed at reducing sexual assault. Using both sociological and social psychological lenses, they seek to illuminate the grey area surrounding sexual consent. The authors' goal is to help spur changes in culture, practices, rules, and infrastructure to ultimately reduce sexual violence and increase sexual autonomy for all people.

What does it mean to be a "man"? What do men think about contemporary notions of gender and the social issues stemming from these ideas? Drawing from the responses of thousands of men, J. E. Sumerau and Giuseppina Valle Holway invite readers to see how men react to aspects of what it means to be a man today. They argue that an interest in men's attitudes can provide revelations about broader relationships between gender and society. This book uncovers how men affirm or reject contemporary aspects of manhood, and the ways these attitudes influence important aspects of their lives including relationships, families, religion, health, and sexual behaviors. Bookended by a methodological appendix of the measures, approach, and limitations of the decade-spanning study examined, That's What He Said is an important analytical introduction to manhood in contemporary society.

We borrow and lend possessions, sign up to social networking sites, agree to sexual advances, and undergo medical procedures-all by giving consent. Without consent, these acts would be rights violations. With it, they can be made permissible. Consequently, questions about consent are controversial and ethically fraught. The Ethics of Consent is a clear and much-needed introduction to this fundamental topic. In Part I, the authors examine conceptual and theoretical questions surrounding consent, providing an accessible overview of topics such as validity, competence, the informational requirements for consent, coercion, manipulation, and deception. In Part II they examine consent to medical care, clinical research, online data use, sex, and government. The book addresses important and controversial subjects, including the involuntary treatment of patients in healthcare, the payment of healthy volunteers in research, the use of data-collecting technology in public education, the ethics of intoxicated sex, and the authority of referendums. An excellent starting point for anyone studying the ethics of consent, this book will be valuable for those working in philosophy, applied ethics and philosophy of law, as well as related disciplines such as medicine, public policy, and gender studies.
