Baglama, Sercan Hamza, Contemporary Refugee Literature: Syria and Beyond. (Routledge Literary Studies in Social Justice) 184 pp. 2025:7 (Routledge, UK)
ISBN 978-1-032-75631-8 hard ¥40,832.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

In the twenty-first century, millions have been forcibly displaced due to ethno-religious conflicts, socio-political instability, and economic crises, turning migration into a global phenomenon. The traumatic realities of refugees - imprisonment, torture, loss, discrimination, and marginalisation - have increasingly become subjects of academic inquiry across multiple disciplines. Literature has also played a crucial role in representing these complexities, and offered fictionalised accounts of refugee experiences before, during, and after migration. This book critically examines contemporary refugee narratives, and highlights their potential to universalise the refugee experience. It argues that while contemporary refugee literature challenges dominant representations and reclaims subjectivity, it is also shaped by the Western literary marketplace, which refashions displacement into marketable narratives of resilience and redemption, tempering its radical potential and framing it within apolitical humanitarian discourse that prioritises empathy over structural critique. The book calls for refugee narratives to resist market-driven expectations and assert their own modes of storytelling.

The book highlights important issues the tribals here are facing today that are linked to their cultural religion and traditional life. It also examines how humans develop an understanding of themselves vis-a-vis their relationships with others. The philosophical discussion on the concept of tribal as a category of ontology is attempted to offer certain manifested realities on the problems entailed by the question ≪Who is the Other≫? It also discusses nationalism and the search for the other’s otherness as a value signifier of identity, and how each of the different identities has a relative significance in different contexts.

Arnold, Craig Anthony (Tony) / Powell, C. M. et al. (eds.), Racial Justice in American Land Use. 350 pp. 2025:9 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <746-520>
ISBN 978-1-108-47780-2 hard ¥29,568.- (税込) GB£ 105.00

Over a century after racial zoning was invalidated, American land use remains racially unjust. When racist tools were abolished, other facially neutral tools were created or adapted to maintain white power and wealth. Policies, practices, and laws evolved to embed racial inequality and white supremacy deeply into institutional structures and landscapes. Despite modest improvements since the early twentieth century, land use and neighborhood conditions for Black people and other people of color remain dramatically worse than for whites. Discrimination and segregation persist. This enduring and multi-faceted nature of racial injustice in the American land use system means that there is no one cause and no one solution. Instead, this book advocates for nuanced systemic change. Using cross-disciplinary analysis in social-movement history, legal theory, and public policy, the authors call for a racial-justice transformation that integrates grassroots racial-justice activism, newly revitalized anti-subordination legal theories, and many different public policy reforms.

These historically grounded essays by Adolph Reed, Jr. and Kenneth W. Warren incorporate essential historical, contemporary and literary perspectives on Black cultural criticism to explore the full portrait of racial injustice and inequality in America.Taking up such topics as the evolving politics of New Orleans before and after Hurricane Katrina and novels by Toni Morrison and Colson Whitehead, this book engages with Black Radical Tradition, Afropessimism, antiblackness, race reductionism, and other key theories and concepts in contemporary black studies. Challenging the prevailing assertion that longstanding white animus against nonwhite peoples sufficiently and adequately explains deepening injustice past injustice or present inequality, the essays argue that such thinking fails to fully explain America's past and leaves us ill-equipped to handle the continuing challenges in the present.Tracing black cultural criticism across the 19th , 20th and 21 centuries, this book will appeal to students, scholars and researchers of Black studies, race and ethnic studies, contemporary and Black American literature.

ISBN 978-92-1-002928-5 paper ¥23,595.- (税込) US$ 110.00

Since 2000, IOM has been producing its flagship world migration reports every two years. The World Migration Report 2024, the twelfth in the world migration report series, has been produced to contribute to increased understanding of migration and mobility throughout the world. The last two years saw major migration and displacement events that have caused great hardship and trauma, as well as loss of life. In addition to the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, millions of people have been displaced due to other conflicts, such as within and/or from the Syrian Arab Republic, Yemen, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Sudan, Ethiopia and Myanmar. There have also been large scale displacements triggered by climate- and weather-related disasters in many parts of the world in 2022 and 2023, including in Pakistan, the Philippines, China, India, Bangladesh, Brazil and Colombia. Further, in February 2023, south-east Tuerkiye and northern Syrian Arab Republic experienced powerful earthquakes, resulting in more than 50,000 deaths. By March, an estimated 2.7 million people had been displaced in Tuerkiye and many had been left homeless in the Syrian Arab Republic. This new edition presents key data and information on migration as well as thematic chapters on highly topical migration issues and is structured to focus on two key contributions for readers. Part I includes key information on migration and migrants (including migration-related statistics); and part II includes balanced, evidence-based analysis of complex and emerging migration issues.

Psychoanalytic Work with Migrants and Refugees presents a rich panorama of the clinical issues facing those who experience migration. Thorough and empathetic in its approach, this book considers the potentially devastating impact of migration on one's sense of personal and cultural identity, using clinical vignettes from reception centres to illustrate the experience of both adult and adolescent migrants. Virginia De Micco looks at the transgenerational impact migration can have on psychic development and child/parent relationships, both on a socio-anthropological and unconscious level. She highlights the unique migratory experience of both women and mothers, equipping readers with the tools to deal with the grief and guilt that can arise in these nuanced situations. Adopting an anthropological approach, De Micco also considers the irrevocable impact of migration on the host country, looking both at the reaction of those who live in the receiving countries as well as the broader impact of multiculturalism and globalisation. Throughout, the book offers a deep, fundamental understanding of the psychic conditions and reactions of people receiving migrants, with a view to avoiding cultural misunderstandings and bias and improving the integration process. This book is an essential manual for psychoanalysts and psychologists working with migrants and refugees, as well as social workers and care workers based in reception centres and other institutions dealing with migrants.

Centered around personal reflection and storytelling, this volume weaves together narratives of educational resilience, kinship, and auntie support to highlight the importance of Indigenous perspectives in all learning spaces.Bringing together the experiences of community members, students, mothers, aunties, and academics, it shows how the voices of Indigenous women and girls represent their ongoing survival within spaces often focused on assimilation and erasure, and puts forward a new way of thinking about the value of Indigenous knowledge. It does so using a storytelling approach which celebrates the experiences of Indigenous girls and women, and expands the definition of education to include more informal spaces of learning in order to address the contentious relationship between Indigenous communities and formal schooling. This celebration of presence accentuates and amplifies the degree to which Indigenous peoples and communities have successfully retained their values and authenticity, despite ongoing attempts at assimilation by the dominant culture. As such, it centers Indigenous perspectives in ways that affirm the experiences of Indigenous women and girls in educational spaces, and demonstrates how girls and women have overcome existing structures to ensure the survival of Indigenous knowledges, cultures, and authenticity.Presenting an innovative new approach to supporting Indigenous girls and women, and centering the need to create new modes of scholarship and thinking that exist outside of the academic system, this book is designed for scholars, faculty, graduates, and educators with interests in education, Indigenous studies, anthropology, sociology, and women's studies.

ISBN 978-1-032-89716-5 hard ¥40,832.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

This volume delves into the complex topic of race relations in 1980s Britain by examining the concept of 'whiteness' and how it was portrayed visually in popular art and mass media. Chapters explore pivotal moments in which the appropriation of race occurred during this critical decade as they relate to the nation's evolving postcolonial identity. This book analyses pivotal cultural moments in print media, fashion, film, television, music video, art, and live events that exemplify how race, gender and sexuality became operative in the way Britain imagined itself in this crucial decade. It contends that the lens of its former colonial empire played a significant role in shaping Britain's self-image throughout the 1980s despite its appearance as a postcolonial and multicultural nation. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, visual culture, media studies, cultural studies, and critical race theory.

Stephens, Russell, The Politics of Sex, Race and Working-Class Slang in Late Second Empire French Caricature. (Routledge Research in Art and Politics) 268 pp. 2025:8 (Routledge, UK) <746-1340>
ISBN 978-1-032-89712-7 hard ¥40,832.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

This study examines caricatures as they appeared within popular Parisian magazines in mid-nineteenth century France at the time of the 1867 World's Fair.Chapters compare the comic mockery of several of the most important satirists of this time, including Amedee de Noe, or "Cham" (1818-1879) as he was more popularly known, and Honore Daumier (1808-1879). A major theme within the analysis is how these caricaturists secretly used argot (street slang), as documented in two slang dictionaries by Parisian litterateur, Alfred Delvau (1825-1867), within their comic images to carry hidden encrypted messages in order to evade the censorship of the day. The book focuses primarily on caricatures of Chinese visitors who were part of the 1866 diplomatic visit to Paris and images of Chinese at the 1867 Exposition Universelle, showing how the satires which were published by Cham used argot to create highly sexualized images that were often racist in nature. In contrast, the volume proposes that Daumier used slang in his caricatures to challenge racism and to make secret reference to current political leaders and politics. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, visual culture, media studies, and communication studies.

Thomas, Paul, Too Black to Be Here?: Exploring Racism in Norway through Four Critical Case Studies. 264 pp. 2025:7 (Emerald, UK) <746-1341>
ISBN 978-1-83662-165-2 paper ¥6,864.- (税込) US$ 32.00

The ebook edition of this title is Open Access and freely available to read online. Racism remains a pervasive issue worldwide, affecting individuals and communities in both overt and subtle ways. In Norway, a country often seen as a model of equality, the challenges faced by Black individuals reveal the deep-seated nature of racial biases. This broader societal problem encompasses themes of white privilege, visibility, and systemic injustice, demanding urgent attention and action. Too Black to Be Here? Exploring Racism in Norway through Four Critical Case Studies offers an authentic perspective on race in Norway from a Black-Norwegian academic, a voice rarely represented in the literature. Author Paul Thomas explores four high-profile cases: the murder of Benjamin Hermansen, which starkly exposes the deadly impact of unchecked racism; Anders Breivik's attacks, highlighting the violent anxiety rooted in white supremacy; Sumaya Jirde Ali's racial abuse, revealing the silence and complicity surrounding racial injustice; and Johanne Ihle-Hansen's adoption case, examining the structural racism in adoption practices. Employing an interdisciplinary approach that draws from critical race theory, whiteness studies, post-structural, and postcolonial theories, this work provides a nuanced and thorough analysis of these issues, offering both a scholarly and personal narrative. This important work is not only an academic inquiry but also a call to action, aiming to foster a more inclusive and equitable society. Educators, policymakers, advocates, and anyone committed to racial justice and equity will find valuable insights to inspire meaningful change and promote racial literacy in the global context.

Winter, Elke (ed.), Beyond Binaries and Polarization?: Rethinking Pluralist Inclusion in Immigrant Nations. 139 pp. 2025:6 (Routledge, UK) <746-1345>
ISBN 978-1-041-02473-6 hard ¥40,832.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

This book explores what lies between the statuses of insider and outsider in immigrant nations. It asks: Who is conditionally included/excluded in relation to whom, and for what reasons? What does this conditional inclusion/exclusion entail in terms of citizenship, material resources, and sense of belonging? How does it affect the cultural and economic well-being of refugees, migrants and the host society? The focus is on Canada, which is often described as the quintessential immigrant nation. The chapters in this book provide new insights into several hotly contested issues: the overlapping cultural and economic logics of nationalist inclusion/exclusion, the growing prevalence of temporary and two-step migration regimes, the importance of cities in managing multiculturalism, the need to disaggregate minority groups, and the intersections of race, class and gender in narratives of nationhood. By shifting the focus of research from us/them binaries to the study of relational inclusion/exclusion involving three or more actors or groups, this book highlights the often-overlooked conditionality and temporality of immigrant inclusion, the messiness of policies aimed at ethnic diversity, and the uneven distribution of attitudes among members of minority groups. This book will be valuable for scholars, students, and policymakers in the fields of sociology, political science, migration studies, and Canadian studies. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Nationalism and Ethnic Politics and are accompanied with a new Foreword, a comprehensive glossary, and critical engagement questions.

Conceived at the unique, intersecting moment of commemoration of 1947 Partition of British India, 1971 Bangladesh independence and 1972 exodus from Uganda, this book focuses on the entangled memories of Partition and its associated events in the diaspora. The chapters in this book explore the cultural and social significance of diasporic memorialisation done in reference to Partition, as it overlaps with the commemoration of key historical moments of change for the South Asian diaspora.Bringing together scholars based in Bangladesh, India and the UK and working within memory studies, history, ethnomusicology, sound studies, literature, film studies, postcolonial studies and media and communication, this edited volume reflects the transnational and interdisciplinary nature of the study of Partition memory in the diaspora and the multiple ways diasporic Partition memory is inherited and creatively remembered. It examines how Partition memory is actively constructed and communicated in media and cultural forms and delves into the particularity and potential in diasporic remembering of Partition memory, the role of arts and culture in remembering contested pasts and shared cultural heritage, and the impact these commemorations have on diasporic identities in the present. This book is essential reading for students, scholars, and researchers of South Asian diaspora studies, memory studies, postcolonial studies, and those interested in the intersections of history, culture, and identity in the diaspora. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of South Asian Diaspora.

This book addresses key challenges and issues faced by South Asians in the diaspora, focusing on irregular migration, remittances, gender, identity, and citizenship, and how they are intertwined, particularly in the context of globalization.South Asia has long played a significant role in the history of international migration. Today, its diasporas are among the largest in the world, reflecting the region's immense diversity. The diversity found in South Asia is also represented in the South Asian diasporas. From the perspective of globalization and transnational migrations, the contribution of diasporic South Asians to their homelands and the host societies is immense. Lately, South Asian diasporas' contribution to various ongoing and new development projects in their homelands has received the attention of researchers and policymakers alike. Hence, many homeland governments have taken multiple measures to woo the diasporas and vice versa. However, despite the efforts of the homeland, the diasporas continue to face various challenges, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, among others. This book is an essential resource for scholars, policymakers, and students interested in migration studies, South Asian studies, globalization, and transnationalism. The chapters in this book were originally published in South Asian Diaspora, and are accompanied by a new Introduction.

Tilley, Lisa, Liberation Ecology: Against the Racial Capitalist World System. 224 pp. 2026:1 (Pluto Pr., UK) <746-1170>
ISBN 978-0-7453-5011-0 paper ¥5,628.- (税込) GB£ 19.99

Our planetary systems are in crisis and dominant capitalist solutions are largely making things worse. Across the world system, communities are rising up with revolutionary alternatives, but these are too often overlooked by mainstream environmental governance spheres and Global North climate movements. Liberation Ecology argues that to confront socioecological crises, we must understand racial capitalism as a world ecological system-one that shapes how environmental destruction is experienced and resisted across continents. By linking the struggles of Indigenous frontiers, Third World peripheries, and Global North core spaces, the book explores the immense power of socioecological solidarity. Urgent and uncompromising, Liberation Ecology reveals why we cannot solve the climate crisis with frameworks that centre the North or ignore racial structures of oppression. We must build a politics of solidarity to create ecologies of liberation.

Paulus, Susanne, Migration, Participation and the Making of Homes: Narrations from a "Refugees Welcome" Community Garden in Germany. (Routledge Advances in Sociology) 176 pp. 2025:7 (Routledge, UK) <746-1218>
ISBN 978-1-032-93441-9 hard ¥40,832.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

This book is an ethnographic inquiry into the complex socio-ecological relationalities in an inclusive, intercultural community garden in Germany, originally created as a "refugees welcome" project in 2015. It explores this quietly political space of civic everyday life which seeks to foster care for both people and planet. In three ethnographic narrations, the book offers power-critical reflections on social encounters, participation, (in)equalities and the dynamics between 'the host' and 'the newcomer' in home-making. The book increases our understanding of how people with refugee biographies shape their surroundings as active agents and how communities navigate social heterogeneity. Furthermore, the narrations shed light on how the doings of people are entangled with the more-than-human such as plants, soils, animals, water and more. Contributing towards the field of social scientific publications that explore the dynamics of migration, belonging, and community-making in pluralistic societies, it takes a transdisciplinary shape, entering into dialogue with literature in sociology, anthropology, (community) education, geography and environmental philosophy. As such, the book will be of interest for researchers and university students of all levels in the field of sociology, education, social work, anthropology, political science or related fields. It will also be useful for (civil) organisations working within the field of refugee support and/or integration, policy makers and (local) governments.

ISBN 978-1-032-80205-3 hard ¥40,832.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

This book examines the prevalence of racism, xenophobia, antisemitism, and Islamophobia in European football. It provides critical assessments of selected policies, strategies, campaigns, and initiatives that have been developed by various stakeholders aimed at combating these discriminatory practices.Bringing together leading football researchers, the book opens with a discussion of the historical context for racism, xenophobia, antisemitism, and Islamophobia in European football and outlines the key terms and core concepts that frame the study of this topic. The book then offers ten in-depth case studies of European countries, including England, France, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands. Each chapter describes and analyses the various manifestations of racism, xenophobia, antisemitism, and/or Islamophobia against the specific socio-historical, demographic, political and cultural context of the country before engaging with the responses of selected stakeholders. The case studies are followed by a critical account of supra-national responses, including the involvement of UEFA, the European Union, the Council of Europe, and Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE). The book is rounded off by a cross-cultural, comparative analysis drawing out the key themes that define the problem of racism and discrimination in European football today. The most up-to-date study of one of football's most disconcerting and enduring issues, this book is fascinating reading for any student, researcher, policy-maker or practitioner with an interest in the sociology of sport, football and its fan cultures, issues of inclusion and exclusion in modern societies, European football and the relationships between sport and wider society.

Donnels O'Malley, Lurana, Black Activists Write Wheatley and Washington: Terrell, Du Bois, and the Drama of the 1932 Bicentennial. (Routledge Advances in Theatre & Performance Studies) 290 pp. 2025:7 (Routledge, UK) <746-1244>
ISBN 978-1-032-36093-5 hard ¥40,832.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

The book examines how early twentieth century Black theatre artists depicted national mythologies of the United States.White-authored pageants and plays written for the 1932 Bicentennial celebration of George Washington's birthday relegated Black Americans to the periphery through racist stereotyping. Black activists Mary Church Terrell and W. E. B. Du Bois seized the opportunity to place Black people at center stage and to revise contemporary views of Washington and of Black achievement. Terrell's The Pageant-Play of Phyllis Wheatley and Du Bois's George Washington and Black Folk dramatize how the achievements of Black men and women fit into the US origin story. The book combines O'Malley's edited versions of these two scripts with a scholarly monograph contextualizing them within the larger Bicentennial event. This edition will be the first time that Terrell's pageant, a biography of the life of the enslaved African poet Phillis Wheatley, has ever been published. Du Bois's pageant is a transgressive revision of the Washington myth. This interdisciplinary book will be a valuable resource for college and university courses in American theatre and performance studies, Black Studies, and Women's Studies, as it includes the scripts themselves, the book is particularly useful in theatre or literature classes in these subject areas.

Garner, Bryon L., Black Veteranality: Military Service and the Illusion of Inclusive Patriotism. 144 pp. 2025:7 (Routledge, UK) <746-1002>
ISBN 978-1-032-78042-9 hard ¥38,016.- (税込) GB£ 135.00
ISBN 978-1-032-77768-9 paper ¥10,979.- (税込) GB£ 38.99

How does military service collide with Black identity in a racially stratified America? Black Veteranality is an examination of the intersection of race, patriotism, and military service from the perspective of Black veterans, offering a robust framework for reimagining American patriotism and reframing veteran identity. Black veteranality emerges through an interdisciplinary synthesis of W.E.B. DuBois' foundational concept of "double-consciousness"-the psychological duality Black Americans experience when negotiating racialized identity formations-and Veteran Critical Theory's structural analysis of institutional power dynamics shaping military service members. Through critical ethnography and narrative interviews, this conceptual framework interrogates monolithic veteran narratives by documenting how Black servicemembers simultaneously embody patriotic ideals through military service while confronting systemic racism's psychological toll and navigate what critical race scholars term the White gaze-a hegemonic social mechanism that perpetuates exclusion through perpetual scrutiny of Black veterans' cultural authenticity and national belonging. Essential reading for scholars of African American studies, American Studies, Veteran Studies, and military professions, this work bridges academia and activism, proving true loyalty lies in confronting systemic inequities.

マイノリティ、欠乏、紛争
Montanes Jimenez, Antonio et al. (eds.), Minorities, Scarcity and Conflict. (Routledge Advances in Minority Studies) 216 pp. 2025:7 (Routledge, UK) <746-1015>
ISBN 978-1-032-63639-9 hard ¥40,832.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

This volume places scarcity as a defining aspect of minorities' collective experience and as a tool to comprehend ongoing and unresolved societal friction and global environmental challenges, strategies for survival and reproduction of the status quo, as well as aspirational desires for social mobility. The book is an experimental collective intellectual project departing from conventional approaches to scarcity solely as a resource-based economic or demographic concept. Boldly, the book looks at the ways in which disadvantaged social groups navigate their lives through scarcity, how these circumstances are endured, interpreted, accepted or challenged. In a thought-provoking turn, the book makes a novel contribution to minority studies by engaging with scarcity not only concerning resources but also emotion, memory and affect. In analysing scarcity as a multidimensional analytical framework and interrogating it from manifold angles, the book unpacks uncharted ramifications of debates around scarcity and opens new lines of enquiry. The collection will be a valuable resource for academics, researchers and policy-makers working in the areas of Law, Political Anthropology and Sociology.
