Chief Scribe Rami Mehmed (1655-1708) and the Politics of Eloquence traces the career of Rami Mehmed, an Istanbul-born Ottoman scribe who rose to become chief scribe in the late seventeenth century and grand vizier in the early eighteenth. The book examines how Ottoman scribes, including Rami Mehmed, envisioned themselves as a unique political and intellectual community during this period and asserted their secretarial eloquence as the linchpin of their increasing political agency in imperial governance. In doing so, it connects the story of an ordinary Ottoman subject to the scribes' growing political influence and shows how their influence extended from public administration to diplomacy.
