The story of Blacks who integrated Cleveland's Buckeye neighborhood is currently absent or minimized from current histories. This book conveys the voice, a first-hand account of the experience, of the black families who dared to desegregate the Hungarian ethnic enclave of the Buckeye community during the 1960s and 1980s, emphasizing their untold story. From White to Black probes the broader purpose of community for Hungarian immigrants and black migrants from the South who struggled to coexist, focusing on the similarities in the hopes, dreams, and desires of both groups. Through the use of primary sources, oral histories and authentic stories, this book argues that there were more similarities in the experiences of the Hungarian immigrants and the Blacks who integrated the neighborhood than there were differences. Understanding those similarities through the lens of those who integrated, allows for a more accurate and consistent accounting of the transition experience.
