解説
Pioneering study of Himalayan diasporic literature that focuses on the voices, memories and identities of Tibetan and Nepalese writers writing in English.
Situated at the intersection of Diaspora Studies, Migration Studies, Postcolonial Studies, and Himalayan Studies, this book explores how literary narratives negotiate questions of nation, homeland, exile, migration, belonging, and cultural survival in an increasingly interconnected world.
Through close readings, the book examines how the migrants' view the dynamic relationship between nation and diaspora across the Himalayan region. It highlights the contrasting trajectories of the Tibetan diaspora, shaped by exile and political displacement, and the Nepalese diaspora, marked largely by migration, mobility, and transnational belonging. Moving beyond conventional understandings of diaspora, the book introduces the concepts of Himalayan identity, Himalayan citizenship, and pan-Himalayan consciousness, highlighting the shared cultural and historical connections that link the peoples of Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan, and India.
Enriched by exclusive interviews with seven distinguished writers - Tsering Namgyal Khortsa, Tenzin Tsundue, Tsering Wangmo Dhompa, Samrat Upadhyay, Rabi Thapa, Smriti Ravindra, and Chandra Gurung - the study offers rare insights into the creative, political, and cultural dimensions of Himalayan diasporic writing.
