Proceedings of the Harvard Celtic Colloquium Volume 44 includes several contributions touching upon the connection of language with ethnicity, leading off with Robert Dunbar's J. V. Kelleher lecture that surveys the perception of other ethnic groups by the Gaelic diaspora in North America from the eighteenth to early twentieth century. Sarah Zeiser's keynote examines the internal clues of a Latin manuscript and identifies its Welsh origins based on inferences of ecclesiastical culture. Articles on Welsh literary works examine stylistic crossover with Latin elegy, in one instance, and Arthurian romance, in another. The Irish language is examined in two presentations: one on constructions for expressing emotion, and another on the emergence of queer terminology. Irish popular music features in a case study on a song moving from Ireland to America as well as in a project to restore archived songs to current oral song tradition. Other articles examine poetic traditions and contemporary society in Irish literary works. This volume also features an article on the revival of Manx in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century and one on the importance of the Late Antique tin trade to Classical references to "Celts."
