解説

This book offers a comprehensive account of the life of Anton Semyonovich Makarenko (1888-1939), who for decades was considered a pedagogical giant throughout the Eastern Slavic region, yet remains largely unknown in the English-speaking sphere. Trained as a schoolmaster, Makarenko became director of a Soviet home for street children in 1920, where he developed a reformatory programme and educational approach for youths regarded as juvenile delinquents.

The book situates Makarenko within the turbulent political and ideological landscape of early Soviet history, examining how a man who did not start out as a Stalinist ultimately became one. It explores his formative years, his sense of national identity and self, and his pedagogical work conducted under the authority of the Soviet secret police. The chapters analyse his direction of the Gorkii Colony, his pedagogical methods and reformatory strategies, the influence of Russian military tradition, and the historiography surrounding his legacy. Stripping away the hagiographical facade created by Soviet propaganda in the years following his death reveals a far more complicated-and flawed-figure. The book offers insight not only into Makarenko himself, the struggles of Soviet education and the political agenda embedded in its vision of reform, but also questions what it means to design a curriculum that truly supports children's cognitive and emotional development.
