Biomedical Therapies for Fatal Diseases documents the history of treating various fatal diseases and the progress made on various therapies that have extended life expectancy and alleviated suffering in those afflicted by these diseases. For example, advances in vaccination protocols have rendered some diseases, which were once almost always fatal, nearly extinct. After the introductory explanation, this book
explains causes or mechanisms of fatal diseases such as cancer and ALS, and recent therapies that may relieve patients' suffering, such as photoimmunotherapy, checkpoint blockade therapy, CAR T-cell therapy, and current ALS therapy. Furthermore, clinical trials approved by the FDA are described.

Tadayoshi Shioyama received his bachelor's degree in physics in 1966 and doctorate degree in engineering in 1984 from Kyoto University's Department of Mathematics and Applied Physics. He was inaugurated as professor at the Kyoto Institute of Technology in 1992. Since 2007, he has been professor emeritus at the Kyoto Institute of Technology.
