Laura Elias beschäftigt sich im vorliegenden Band mit der Frage, inwiefern fotografische Bilder zur Konstruktion imaginierter ethnischer Kollektive und zur Herstellung ethnographischen Wissens benutzt wurden und inwiefern die Fotografie als Strategie zur Erforschung und Aneignung fremder Völker diente. In welcher Zeit welche Art der fotografischen Darstellung nicht-russischer Völker von den historischen Akteur:innen als wissenschaftlich relevant und erkenntnisversprechend betrachtet wurde und welchen Stellenwert die Fotografie in den neuen Disziplinen der Ethnographie und physischen Anthropologie einnahm, ist Gegenstand dieser Analyse. This monograph covers the significance of photography in the new disciplines of ethnography and physical anthropology in the Russian imperial context. It analyses to what extent photographic images contributed to the construction of imagined ethnic communities and the production of ethnographic knowledge, as well as to what extent photography served as a strategy for the exploration and appropriation of foreign peoples. Which type of photographic representation of non-Russian peoples was considered by historical actors as scientifically relevant and how this evolved is one of the leading questions.
