英国の条約港に関する政府文書・個人文書約40万ページを収録
本コレクションは、Gale の「China and the Modern World」シリーズの第 9 集として、近現代中国と西洋諸国の外交関係をさらに掘り下げる文書を提供するデジタル・アーカイヴです。「条約港と西洋世界 1759–1972 年」として、中国各地の英国領事館と北京公使館の文書群を中心に収録しています。
18 世紀以降、清朝は広東（広州）を唯一の貿易港として特許商人・商社に貿易を独占させていました。広東体制と呼ばれるこの管理貿易体制は、アヘン戦争後の南京条約（1842 年）により上海等の 5 港が開港することで終焉を迎え、開港場はその後中国各地に拡大します。貿易の拠点としての開港場の拡大に加えて、英国をはじめとする欧米諸国は清朝政府との対等な外交関係の樹立を目指し、そのために外国公使の北京常駐と清朝政府における外交管轄部門の設置を求めました。
本コレクションでは、清末民国期中国における 20 以上の内陸地域・湾岸地域の英国の条約港に関連する資料を、地方の英国領事館と北京公使館の文書群を中心に提供します。具体的には、天津、寧波、厦門、漢口、青島、大沽、鎮江、福州、宜昌、温州、牛荘（営口）、芝罘（煙台）、済南、成都、昆明、澳門（マカオ）、広州、台湾、淡水の領事館文書、外務省領事局文書、チベットとモンゴルに関する機密文書、中国駐在大使館・公使館文書、北京駐在公使館文書、貿易監督官 Henry Pottinger 関係文書、北京駐在公使 John Newell Jordan 関係文書、外務次官 Edmund Hammond 関係文書等、1830 年代から 1950 年代までの約 120 年間にわたる約 40 万ページの文書群です。
これらの英国国立公文書館所蔵の文書群に加え、天津の英国租界の文書と写真（個人蔵）が提供されます。収録文書にはタイプ打ち文書と手書文書が含まれますが、光学文字認識（OCR）と手書文字認識（HTR）の技術が実装されているため、収録文書はすべて全文検索に対応しています。
