解説

This is the sixth in a series of volumes designed to provide advice and support to students and librarians specializing in health sciences, as well as documenting the practice itself. This volume takes readers through the cataloguing process. Focusing on the tasks to be done, each chapter reflects the research done by a particular author. The first chapter provides an overview of the practical considerations necessary for the administration of cataloguing activities. Chapter two explains the rules found in AACR2R that govern the process of creating a catalogue record, and the third chapter discusses the development and application of various classification and subject heading schemes. Chapter four details the purpose, principles and processes of authority control, defines the types of headings that should be controlled and describes various means of maintaining both the authority files and the catalogue. In chapter five, the means to find the standards that apply to cataloguing is provided, and chapter six goes on to provide readers with information on the differences between controlled vocabulary, a thesaurus, a subject heading list and indexing language. The final chapter takes readers from the past into the future of bibliographic management.
