Poverty, poor health, malnutrition, population increase and gender bias are among the principle development challenges facing 1990s India. This text explores how the HIV epidemic compares in importance to these long-standing crises. It includes research findings and policy debates. The impact of the epidemic on agriculture and industrial production is discussed, as is the vulnerability of women to the spread of HIV, expecially in terms of how women's roles in households determine family responses to illness death.
