Great challenges confront post-communist Russia as its government attempts to implement political reform. Faced with economic hardships, the threat implicit in demilitarization, and the visible instability of those nations which were formerly part of the Soviet Union, many Russians seem to be turning away from democracy and market-orientated reforms. Analyzing the problems of contemporary Russia, and examining the Yeltsin Government's attempts to deal with them, this book draws on the work of scholars from both Russia and the West, including George W. Breslauer and Victor Zaslavsky. It focuses attention on a number of problems, including the dichotomy between rebuilding state and nation, economic reform, Russia's relations with the rest of the world, and the troubling rise of right-wing Russian nationalism. It also traces the complex interplay between the communist legacy and efforts to chart new directions.
