This book explores modern representations of the Black Death, one of the most well-known events in European medieval history. It uses the concept of cultural memory to examine how journalists, writers of fiction, and scholars (among others) referred to, described, and explained this medieval pandemic, from c. 1800 onwards. It illustrates how modern media used the distant medieval past to make sense of the present, from the cholera pandemics of the nineteenth century, to the climate crisis of our own time. A series of overlapping myths pertaining to the Black Death emerged, grounded only partly in historical evidence. This book explores this cultural memory across a wide range of media, from scholarly articles to video games, and considers the connections and differences between mediated representations of the Black Death. This book will be of interest to scholars of medieval history, literature and medievalisms.
