Daily encounters with the binary gender system are fraught for those who do not fit comfortably within this restrictive system?such as those who identify as neither man nor woman, or for people who identify as both, or for those who experience gender as unstable and fluid. This book illuminates the restrictive impact of this gender binary system upon people’s daily lives through interviews with 47 gender nonbinary people. Chapters illustrate some processes that help nonbinary people discover and assert their gender, including rethinking sex and gender, resignifying gender through visual and verbal cues, redoing relationships, and resisting institutional erasure. Collectively, these laborious processes contribute towards what sociologists call the “redoing” of gender. The diverse experiences of nonbinary people in this book will help cisgender friends, coworkers, teachers, classmates, and family members of nonbinary people relate to gender minorities with more compassion, and may also appeal to those who are questioning their own gender. In addition, this text will be of keen interest to academics across Sociology and Gender Studies.
