≫Poor Nobility in Prussia, 1770?1830≪ Destitute landowners, starving officers, working women ? considering neglected sources, this study is the first to center the experience of impoverished nobility in Prussia. Nobles lost their estates, ended up in towns, and were forced to assume low-paid positions. Structurally caused and widespread, poverty was constantly increasing since the 18th century and became a serious threat to both the inner cohesion of the nobility and to the aristocracy’s claim to leadership, and thus had a serious impact on 19th-century German politics and society.
