The rapid growth in urbanization is leading to constantly growing metropolitan regions with overcrowded traffic routes, limited building space, and an increasingly difficult supply situation. Policymakers and citizens are confronted with the challenge of densely populated areas hindering the basic goals of mobility, freedom, self-determination, security, prosperity, communication. In this light, the authors of this book ask: how can metropolitan regions be made humane? The authors’ answer to this question is to follow a human-centric and sustainable approach towards designing infrastructure, efficient logistics, mobility solutions, and intelligent applications for navigation and communication. Citizens need to be involved as active co-designers of future metropolitan regions.
