解説

The German Expressionist Body and the Philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer: The Triumph of the Will c. 1905 - 1918 explores depictions of the human body in German Expressionist art and argues that these depictions might profitably be interpreted through Arthur Schopenhauer's philosophy and a hybridized methodology. The book focuses on two claims which were expressed by the German painter Franz Marc that: "In Schopenhauer's terms, the world as will today takes precedence over the world as representation" and "Today we seek under the veil of appearances things hidden in nature that seem to us more important than the discoveries of the Impressionists." Through examinations of Kandinsky's personal reading of Schopenhauer's doctrine of vision and color, depictions of dance in the work of Emil Nolde, the Expressionist theme of the naked body in relation to Schopenhauer's doctrine of the Platonic Ideas and the world as representation, and the role of World War I in Expressionist artists' affirmation or denial of the will to war, Marc Brealey offers a rigorous, historically based, and practical critique of popular theoretical positions in artistic theory from a philosophical perspective.
