In March 2016 democracy returned in large measure to Myanmar, and along with it the hopes and expectations of millions for a better economy. Once amongst the richest countries in Southeast Asia, at the start of the 21st century Myanmar was amongst the poorest nations on earth. Efforts to turn around Myanmar's economy have been underway since 2011, when Myanmar's last predominantly military government came to power. The economic reforms prompted the return of major development actors like the World Bank, IMF and Asian Development Bank, launching of a myriad of bi-lateral schemes and growth of a vast ecosystem of international NGOs. But the approach was top down, still authoritarian at heart, and not enough. Now, with the NLD electoral victory in November 2015, Myanmar is waking up to a genuinely new dawn and the chance to build something better. Based on the experiences and work of a participant/observer to the process and frank in its discussion, Myanmar's Economic Renaissance offers a unique perspective on the country's economic reforms, and of the players, the plans and forces driving it.
