While there is a growing body of theoretical literature on high-impact practices (HIP) and their benefit to student outcomes, there is little out there that guides faculty on the development of HIP classroom experiences. This book was created to serve as a resource for faculty who are interested in incorporating high-impact practices into their family life education programming. The book targets faculty/staff in higher education that are seeking to incorporate high-impact experiences into first-year programs/courses, and will serve as models to guide their own planning. Presented in a narrative format by faculty and staff currently teaching first-year students, each chapter provides an overview of strategies used to include the elements of high-impact practices with first generation students and others who have been traditionally underrepresented. Each chapter emphasizes teaching collaboration as a fundamental skill for academic and social success.
