解説

Contemporary debates throw up terms such as `ethnicity' and `identity politics' as a direct fallout of the rapid rise in ethnic discord, especially in the North East. This book deals with ethnicity in the context of Assam and examines the three recent conflicts, namely, the Assam Movement (1979-85), the United Liberation Front of Assam or ULFA (1979-present) and the Bodo Movement (1987-present). It traces the roots of these ethnic struggles to British administrative policies.

Assam and Ethnicity: Revisiting Faultlines analyses whether contemporary conditions have led to further tensions. It does so by exploring the unending strife and secessionist movements in the North East. It simultaneously tries to look into the allegations that the term `ethnicity' may have been misappropriated altogether and also establishes why these are not ethnic problems per se.
