Drawing on extensive original research, this book examines the changing relationship between Ireland and the United States over the past five decades. A period in which Ireland has grown from an impoverished country on the edge of Europe, whose major export was its own people, to an economically successful country at the heart of the European Union and the main recipient of United States investment in Europe. This book explores the US contribution to that transformation and how foreign policy towards Ireland has been shaped by the administration's relationship with Irish America and the special relationship with Britain. The US contribution to war and peace in the north of Ireland and its influence on Irish foreign policy throughout the period is considered in the context of US - Irish relations. Using a wide range of primary and secondary sources, including presidential, congressional and ambassadorial records, Marsden presents a unique insight into a special relationship, built on kinship ties and shared values that have economically and politically benefited the Irish Republic.
