En partant de La structure du comportement , et par l'intermediaire notamment des travaux de Goldstein, l'etude situe le contexte dans lequel le langage apparait comme theme majeur dans la pensee de Merleau-Ponty au sein d'un debat sur le vivant qui remonte a la philosophie kantienne. Sont reexaminees alors l'influence de la phenomenologie allemande sur Merleau-Ponty, ainsi que sa reflexion sur la litterature, la linguistique, et l'art, en s'appuyant aussi bien sur des ecrits publies que sur des textes inedits.
