解説

This is an exploration of an internationally known radical, state comprehensive school drawing out the lessons for educationalists today, seeking an alternative to current government policy. Countesthorpe College opened in 1970 as the 'jewel in the crown' of the critically acclaimed 'Leicestershire Plan' and was internationally recognized as a model for successful pedagogy, individualized learning and democratic management. As a community college, it was used extensively both during the day and in the evening by people in the local area, and adults were integrated into classes with young people. Unlike other radical schools, it was not closed but transformed and by the early 1990s the school had lost its radical features, along with the invaluable lessons which could be leant from the radical approach for future students, staff and educationalists. By exploring the original aims of Countesthorpe College and looking at why its radical approach was later transformed, Lorna Chessum provides an alternative model to that of schools today. In providing a critical reappraisal of Countesthorpe College she raises aspects of the model that can inform discussion of alternatives to current policy and provide a more engaging experience which could improve standards.
