Records management is a management discipline whose identity, domain, size, and professional status are still evolving. Also known as records and information management, it emerged as a field during World War II as paperwork management, a set of strategies developed to address the enormous accumulation of records needed to run the U.S. war machine. Since then, computer applications have taken those principles and extended their reach within the organization.
