This book examines developments in Poland from 1989 to the present. Based on extensive original research, including the author's interviews with many of the leading participants, the book discusses the different visions for a post-communist Poland held by different parties and individuals, and outlines how events have unfolded, and how these visions have been either implemented, frustrated or modified. It considers economic transition, changes to the political system, political parties, the development of democracy, and Poland's relationship with the European Union. It analyses the factors which led to the emergence of the Kaczynski twins as president and prime minister, and explores the reasons for the relative instability of Polish politics. It examines developments in Polish society, and discusses the role of the Catholic church, first in helping to undermine communism, and also its subsequent divisive and sectarian impact on the new Polish polity. Throughout the author draws on her personal acquaintance with leading participants to show how Poland's transition was viewed from their perspectives.
