This book attempts to analyse some aspects of education and society in Mizoram. Its aim is to contextualize education in the framework of a 'political economy of schooling in which important questions of not only agency and structure are considered, but the significant issues of the State, politics and of ideology and culture are adressed'. It strives to explore not only the micro-processes within the school but also to examine school education in its linkages with the wider society.

Although sociologists have generally examined the relationship between education and stratification another aspect that deserves our attention is the relation between education and culture. This study aims to fill this significant gap in existing studies. It attempts to examine the linkages between education and inequality and also those between education and culture, which is as yet an un-researched and unfathomed area, though in recent years, culture as an object of enquiry has been gaining salience. The author shows how one can understand a society and a culture through the lens of education while seeking to examine the lived experiences of the present with regard to the process and experience of schooling and in relation to the life at home and in the community.

It is clear that the analysis of education in India has moved away significantly from the structural-functional paradigm of the 1960s and early 1970s to the studies linking education and inequality in the later 1970s to the critical studies of the 1980s. The present study can be seen as taking these themes forward especially in the critical zone of the hilly areas of North-East India which often simmer in discontent and pose a serious challenge for mainstream India. It also explores the role education can play in promoting understanding, peace and harmony between the inhabitants of this region and their brethren in mainland India and also between India and other countries of South and South-East Asia
