Many countries around the world find themselves grappling with problems of drug abuse. International collaborative efforts and policies have been mostly geared to obstructing the supply of drugs, while efforts to control demand have been left to national governments. Meanwhile, extensive programmes have been funded in recent decades to research the etiology and epidemiology of drug abuse as well as the drugs-crime relationship.
