解説

This book is interdisciplinary in its focus and written for audiences from diverse backgrounds - for example, educators, researchers, policy makers - and addresses issues critical to each of them, by providing numerous real world examples about identity and negotiating social context. Its framework has potential to examine because it expands upon some of the important theoretical work in this area, by testing these theories via personal interviews and focus groups with a sample of biracial women. Biracial women discuss how they are portrayed in the media and how they feel about the recent census changes. Additionally, they talk about their experiences as biracial women, as opposed to men, and how this impacts their identification choices. The book also established the role of family members on biracial identity, for example, the influence of parents, siblings and children, how the biracial women discuss their parents influence on their identities, and how they felt that their siblings had the greatest impact on them. In doing so, they are able to share common experiences, discuss strategies for dealing with discrimination, and find role models for different identity choices by spending time with their siblings.
