In the past, communication scholars did not focus on anything but the adult communicator perspective. Recently, however, there has been a growth of life span scholarship in the field of communication. Communication scholars increasingly recognise that our life stage alters the kinds of communication challenges we face and the kinds of communication skills we require to be competent. Unlike competing texts, Jones/Remland/Sanford includes more current theory and research, and also incorporates scholarship from psychology and sociology. In addition, reviewers have rated the chapters on relational contexts, perception, emotional competence and conflict as particularly strong in comparison to other texts in the market.
