The U.S. takes pride in its status as a nation of immigrants but it has also been, particularly in the last 125 years, a country where immigration has been the source of major controversy. Workers fear losing wages to incoming job prospects. Government officials fear instability. National, racial or religious prejudice come into play, with some in the public fearing cloisters of people who congregate together, speak another language, and come from countries where democracy is alien. At the same time, immigration has provided the United States with undeniable benefits, providing the labor and ingenuity that enabled it to grow over time from break-away colony to a world superpower. Immigrants have served in many of the highest offices in the land, made essential contributions to art, medicine, and literature, created new businesses, and imported valuable ideas and energy. Take away the contributions of immigrants and you take away America.
