解説

Do Islam and the cultures of Europe represent mutually, exclusive identities, or can there be Muslim Europeans? Is it possible to speak of an 'Islam of Europe' rather than of 'Islam in Europe'? What is the history, and what can be the future, of Europe's largest non-Christian religious community? H.A. Hellyer looks to answer these important questions and more in a new study of the 11-12 million Muslims of Western Europe and their relationship with European societies, national governments and the EU. Politically and culturally, Europe has come to terms with the changed environment that the presence of Muslims on the Continent represents but not without conditions. "Islam in Europe" explores these conditions and the various responses to them and shows us how Muslims have negotiated their place in an ever changing Europe. Hellyer takes a unique and broad approach, exploring the history of Muslims in Europe, the theoretical underpinnings of European multiculturalism and the move towards diversity and the responses of the Islamic legal tradition to life in modern Europe. Taking the UK as a case study, "Islam in Europe" uses the experience of Muslims in Britain to explore these theoretical issues in a practical field, before reflecting on perhaps the most important question of all: whether Europe and its Muslims are prepared for the challenge of living together in one society.
