解説
SCLCはキング牧師を中心に南部の黒人プロテスタント系牧師たちによって、モントゴメリー市にはじまるバス・ボイコット運動の中から結成されました。会員数はそれほど多くはなく、黒人のためによりよい仕事と住居を確保することを目的にしていましたが、公民権運動の高揚とともに運動の一つの中心になっていきました。
