At least eight million children die each year because of poverty. This challenging book asks why it is that we are failing to tackle world poverty, even though it kills more methodically and in greater numbers than machetes and militias. Author Pierre Sane, who is UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences, puts forward a powerful case for recognising poverty as a violation of human rights. Only when this vital recognition is achieved, he argues, will poverty cease, and will the world be able to overcome the threats that weigh so heavily on its future. Sane's deceptively simple proposal provides a contrast to the World Bank or "Washington consensus" perspective on poverty. It suggests that thinking about poverty in terms of $1, $2 or $5 per day is to miss the point, and that what is needed is to mobilise public opinion for a universal justice that is within our grasp.
