The Myrdal Lecture, on economic matters, was presented by Nobel laureate Professor Joseph E. Stiglitz. The focus of the lecture is his observations on the present economic and political conditions in an integrated Europe and the challenges that lie ahead for the expansion of the European Union. Among a number of observations are: the need for institutional change; the growth in political decision making being delegated to technocrats; the problems arising from enshrining questionable economic policies into European institutions and legal structures of the Union; the dangers of pushing harmonization too far, thereby undermining institutions in individual countries; the need to focus on employment in any economic policy for the region
