解説

New Horizons in British Urban Policy provides the first integrated, cross-disciplinary analysis of the urban renaissance project pursued by the Labour government since 1997. Drawing upon the collective insights of urban policy researchers with wide-ranging expertise, the book presents a critical assessment of New Labour's attempts to reinvent British cities as affluent, safe, vibrant and attractive places to live and work. In exploring themes as diverse as crime and disorder, devolution, gender, partnership working, place marketing, ethnicity, and urban planning and design, New Horizons in British Urban Policy draws on case study material from across Britain. A number of innovative theoretical interpretations of New Labour's renaissance project are also developed: from work on crisis theory, moral geography and scale, to theories of governmentality and the construction of urban knowledge, the book utilises a range of theoretical perspectives to reveal important contradictions within the urban renaissance vision.
