This book answers three sets of questions related to India's nuclear experience as well as nuclear proliferation in general. First, why did India's leaders want nuclear weapons and how did they manage to get them? Or more generally, why do some nations seek nuclear arms and how do they acquire them? Second, what measures did the United States and other concerned countries take to prevent India from building nuclear bombs and why did they fail? Can general lessons be drawn from this experience for non-proliferation efforts elsewhere? Third, how will India's leaders manage their nuclear arsenal, and what steps can outside powers take to prevent a nuclear exchange in South Asia? And generally, to what ends will new nuclear powers employ their nuclear forces, and what can be done in the international community to prevent nuclear war.
