This collection of 21 essays covers aspects of the Caribbean experience from slavery through the post-independence period. The essays demonstrate the impact of colonialism and the plantation system on Caribbean life, and highlight the efforts that Caribbean peoples have made to uplift themselves from the trammels of colonialism. The section on slavery includes themes such as the origins of slave rebellions in the Middle Passage, hiring practices in the British West-Indies in the 18th century, the struggle for freedom, the role of enslaved children, and Caribbean slaves' festivals. The post-emancipation section deals with urban riots, education, and taxation in the 19th century. The section on political and cultural issues includes themes such as cricket in 19th-century Jamaica, contestation for recreational spaces in Barbados, citizenship, elections issues in Trinidad, Tobago and Guyana, and ideology.
