An unusual example of early Anglo-Japanese socialization and cross-cultural exchange based mostly around the campus of Cambridge University (and to a much lesser extent at Oxford and London) in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Hitherto, little was known of a group of very bright and gifted Meiji-era students who came to Britain ostensibly to "learn the best from the West", but also in some cases to achieve great things. It was essentially these students who provided the catalyst for the modernization processes of the New Japan and also forged the historic links between Cambridge University and Japan, which continue to flourish up to the present day. Cambridge librarian (Japanese Collection), Noboru Koyama, has pieced together a meticulously researched history of the life, family links and experiences of these Meiji students. First published in Japanese in 1999, this English edition by Ian Ruxton (a Cambridge graduate himself) should be welcomed both by researchers of the period as well as students past and present.
