The book is divided into six sections covering: political themes in the Qur'an and the Hadith; juridical texts; theological and philosophical approaches; ethical studies; historical studies; and modern writings. The criterion in the selection of texts is to offer the widest possible spectrum of the different elements of Islamic political writings in terms of historical periods, schools of thought, geographical regions, and principles and concepts. The variety of sources of texts should allow the reader to gain a sense of the main points of debate and argument between different thinkers, as well as an understanding of the general development of Islamic political thought.
