This text focuses on the eastward enlargement of the European Union, and in particular on Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia. It looks at the conceptual challenges facing the European Union due to the enlargement process, such as institutional reform, Europe's new borders and the cultural identity of an enlarged Union, but, more importantly, identifies and analyses the problems facing these three countries from a comparative perspective. Featuring contributions from across Europe and from across the political spectrum, this text analyses a broad range of issues facing the three countries in terms of political, cultural and economic issues brought about by preparations for European Union entry, rather than merely scrutinising the narrow enlargement agenda set by Brussels.
