"The Encyclopaedia and Dictionary of Education" was the first of its kind to be published and constitutes a socio-historical document, as well as providing a huge fund of useful information on everything to do with the theory and practice of education in the early 20th century. The set should be a useful resource for educationalists, and social as well as educational historians. The subtitle describes it as a "Comprehensive, practical and authoritative guide on all matters connected with education, including educational principles and practice, various types of teaching institutions, and educational systems throughout the world". Originally published in 1922 and edited by Professor Foster Watson of the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, "The Encyclopaedia and Dictionary of Education" contains "articles by about 900 eminent authors". Each of the four volumes is about 500 pages long and contains entries ranging in length from about 20 words up to several hundred words. Each volume contains cross references and is illustrated throughout with tables, charts, line drawings and black and white photographs. Volume 4 includes a 25-page classified index at the end.
